SWTF Luke Skywalker is OUT! (Now with OOP pics and mini-review!)

    Hey all --

Just found and bought SWTF Luke Skywalker/X-Wing at the Lafayette, IN Wal-Mart! (There were 2 more left, in case anyone in the area is wondering.)

EDIT: Here's the pics. (Redline: Settle down, Beavis! :D  )

Awesome! This will probably be the most desired figure of the wave too.

would you mind sharing some pics of it in robot mode? I'm really not sure if I want this or not, it depends on how silly the wings look when the mecha is supposed to look like a human *L*

Nice. The Luke and Vader were the only two I wanted from wave 1.

Ahh. Such patience. As you can see, I hadn't opened it yet when I started this thread. Now I've had time to check him out (as well as placate the wife for my being gone for 3 hours then coming home and getting on the computer right away :D  ).

    Here are my thoughts:

As we've come to expect from the SWTF line, much care was taken to make the alt mode faithful. However, I will say that it seems slightly stubbier than the X-Wing models used for the movies and more recent SW toys. More like the proportions of the vintage X-Wing toys. Still looks good, though. Orange mech-mode bits are only visible on the underside.

The amount of sculpted detail is -- again, like the other SWTFs -- impressive. There's even a fairly good amount in the mech-mode cockpit.

Transformation is middle-of-the-road as far as difficulty. Not too frustrating, though the wing cannons do pop off fairly frequently. (All 4 are designed to come off and can be used as hand weapons.) I did pop one leg off at the ball joint once, but that was just because I didn't look too closely at the second joint before moving it. (The hip balls both pivot up and out on pins to give him a wider stance.)

Mech mode looks good, but has some annoying bits. The arm-wings are a bit obtrusive, of course. The shoulder rotation is achieved by rotating the entire wing. However, they felt the need to scupt in a set of tabs, effectively limiting this rotation to 90 degrees. Therefore, he can't raise his arms much past what you see in the picture. That, combined with the shortness of his arms, means he can't even point his cannons horizontally. Despite all this, the instructions show rotating the wings forward past horizontal. I didn't see any way to do this without damaging the toy.

Other articulation consists of neck swivel, upper arm ball joints, elbow hinges, wrist swivels, ball joint hips (with aforementioned extra pivot), knee hinges, foot pivots, and mid-foot hinge. No waist. He can be almost as difficult to stand as Grievous, unfortunately.

Accessories are decent. The 'saber is a good rendition of Luke's from ANH. (Always preferred the ROTJ version, myself.) It can clip underneath in vehicle mode. All four cannons are missile launchers. Unfortunately, they're pressure-launch rather than spring/trigger-launch. :cry

Overall, I'd say he's the weakest of the bunch so far, but only by a little. (His nearest competitor is Grievous, IMO.) I still like it quite a bit, though. The poor launchers and arm annoyances are overcome by great detail, considerable amounts of (other) articulation, and the fact that -- dude -- it's a transforming X-Wing.

GOOD NOW SEND HIM TO ME :mad

But damn, that's an impressive amount of detail on there. And I'm really liking the showdown picture at the end. :D  The wings look like they could be frickin' annoying, but I'll probably still grab this thing once I actually see it.

I snagged one (Luke) yesterday, and I wish I hadn't. I should try another one before condemning the line.

Vader. He is the best, and he is leaps and bounds above the rest. At least try him before giving up on the line. Had he not been the first one I opened, I'd have had a sour taste in my mouth for the others.

I will admit that Vader was the best, but still was mediocre.. I gave him a C and gave Grevious a F.. Only one i will give a chance to is going to be Fett.. Only one i actually want...

Has anyone done a review on Obi-Wan yet? Lately I've been finding myself strangely drawn to him....

I haven't seen a review for Obi-Wan yet either; of the first wave, the only two I have is Vader and Obi-Wan, and I honestly think that the Vader fig is much better. The Obi-Wan fig actually looks much more impressive in person, but my only gripe with it is that his head doesn't stay up very well in bot mode. I absolutely love this line though, cuz the ships are cool as hell and the idea is just ingenious!!!!
