Okay, so a few days ago, on Wednsday, the 3rd, my B-DAY, my school had a pep rally for Haiti, where each teacher had a jar, and the top five who raised the most money had to sing at the rally. So, they had a bunch of idiots singing, and kids were takiung out their cell phones, and were taping it. And so were the teachers. And then a few days after, the assistant principal got an "anonomyous" tip from an "anonymous source", that a few stidents put a videos up on you-tube. So, they got suspended, because "you are not allowed to have phones out during school"! So, if you punish a few students, shouldnt you punish the teachers, since they took out there phones too? What do you guys think? My girlfriend was one of the suspended one, which is bad because she used MINe, not hers. So, opinions? Comments? Aruements about the school system?

 

Sounds like a pretty stupid thing to happen,But the fact of the Teachers being completely responsible makes it even stupider.

given the fact the teachers were doing it as well I think detentions would have been more appropriate than suspensions, but i do agree rules were broken

 

HA my school deon't care if a phone is at school as long as they don't see well you are working and stuff it's fine i once had my laptop a school.

Hmmm...punishment doesn't fit the crime. Detention maybe, but suspension? Back in my day you had to do something really bad to be suspended. Someone is on a power trip.

I think that in this case, "Cool Story, bro" is entirely appropriate. Nevertheless, there is that age-old adage "Do as I say and not as I do." This pretty much applies to everything about high school. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

Part of school is conforming to the social hierarchy which is essentially teachers and administrators are higher than everyone else, practically untouchable unless what happens is against the law.

What bothers me about this thread is the statement here

I can't take this argument seriously since you have a personal/emotional connection to it.

If you have serious complaint with what happened take it up with the administrator who initiated the punishment. And as a bit of a tip "I'm mad because my girlfriend got in trouble!" is not in anyway a valid argument and will do nothing more than get you laughed out the office (or where ever).

at my school, teachers are allowed to use cell phones but the students can't. some are more lenient than others.......but hey, rules are rules, and if you want something done about it, get a parent on the school board or get a petition to them asking to change the rules......other than that there is nothing you can do

 

Rules don't apply to teachers like they do to students. If you didn't know this I am shocked.

 

A couple of points here:

First, that was a most epic story, bro. It will no doubt be burned into the collective human memory and passed down through the generations, to be retold in hushed whispers even around the last dying campfires as our species is inevitably lost to time.

Second, it sounds like the students who got suspended were the ones who went on the internet and posted those videos, thus providing proof in the public sphere that they had violated a school rule. Actual evidence, not just people saying "they had phones out too!".

However, by far the major flaw in your argument is the apparent assumption that teachers and students are in a position of equality and bound by the same rules. That is undoubtedly not so and the "no phones" rule applies solely to the students. There are different rules for people in different positions of any social heirarchy. Get used to it.

Since Columbine, i have reluctantly caved and supported students carrying their cell phones to school, as long as they are turned off. Kids can check those all important "OMFG" texts at lunch or after class waiting for the bus.

the message i get from this thread is that those who helped Haiti the most became targets of ignorant brats who posted vids to make fun, not suppprt them. in that case, the punishment seemed about right.

And really, what's a principal gonna do to tenured, unionized teachers??? send your GF cookies and talk to her when she gets back...get over it.

 

If anything, I get the sense that what the OP is really upset about is that the school decided to have a rally for Haiti on his birthday, not about students being held to the rules by which they must abide.

 

Well, I'm not mad because my girlfriend got suspended. I'm mad because if the students get in trouble, the teachers should too. I'm just saying. Also, they should of asked her if it was her phone, considering it was mine. They just assumed it was hers, so it was their fault, not the students.
