They don't though. Generations has never, and likely will never, be dedicated to G1.

If it were, the Prime Wars toy line plays out waaaay different than it did.

I love the G1 designs like nothing else, but do they really need to be part of Studio Series? We have multiple toylines for G1 characters and G1-esque characters (like Cyberverse). I could see doing Studio Series '86 movie characters after they exhaust all the live-action characters, but there are still a ton left to do. Working in G1 stuff just takes spots away from those characters. And...why? Again, there are other toylines for that exact thing.

Not really considering TFTM (1986) was done by a studio, as are all tv shows

Few people seem to be understanding that Studio Series expanding its scope is a good thing. Toy lines covering multiple incarnations of Transformers allows for a more diverse product assortment and likely greater sales, keeping the line alive longer. G1 isn't "taking over" Studio Series, it's joining the assortment for (what's likely) a temporary anniversary celebration. You're still getting Movieverse guys, there's Grindor and ROTF Sideswipe! There's still a ton of movie characters left to do and the line clearly isn't halting for the 86 Movie assortment.

Remember Thrilling 30? Remember how it was a Generations line featuring characters from the Beast Era, RID01, the Unicron Trilogy, IDW, etc.? Remember how diverse that line was? Something for everyone. That's what this is. Stagnation of one single franchise, whether it be G1 or the movies, limits sales tremendously. With the rumors that WFC3 is set to introduce Beast Wars characters, Generations seems to finally be living up to it's plural name. And that's a good thing.

Studio Series, especially the early releases, had a premium overall presentation (parts count, paint, packaging, sculpt), especially compared to Generations... The 1986 movie is very important to the franchise, it would be nice if we could get some figures that have a higher polish than the standard Generations figures as a tribute to the film.

Studio Series was, and still is, a sub-brand of Generations. As is the WfC trilogy. It's right there on the box. That's why Hasbro/Takara started working harder on promoting the Trilogy/Chapter names on the packaging over the Generations brand.

This is why Hasbro would likely want to start using it to put out figures from other legacy media (including the 86 movie). They don't want to retire Studio Series because it's a strong brand with retailers.

People keep ignoring comparisons to Lightning Collection, Black Series, Marvel Legends, etc...but it's apt. Companies are competing for shelf-space at stores. If retailers are seeing success with Studio Series, they'll keep wanting it on their shelves. Meanwhile, it's going to be harder to convince retailers to make space on the shelves for a third subline of Generations that focuses on G1 designs. Look at how crammed together Transformers already are between Cybverse/WfC/Studio Series.

And sure, Studio Series has tackled niche characters in the past...but it's also possible those niche characters aren't going to be able to sustain the line much longer. So to maintain that presence of shelves, they're going to start mixing in high-profile characters from other continuities (starting with G1 Grimlock, who's got the bonus of being a giant robot dinosaur).

Studio Series is already up and running with the same sort of things we see in those other lines: Uniform box design, branding from the specific source material always stamped in the same spot, a prominent number that can be displayed either from the front or lined up with the spines out...character art. They are, for all intents and purposes, a budget-masterpiece line.

On the other end: Look at the core Generations. They've begun phasing out the branding save for the logo it shares with SS. Instead they play up the trilogy/chapter. I would assume the only reason "Generations" hasn't been fully retired as a brand is because it's strong enough with retailers that it makes it easy for Hasbro to maintain shelf presence.

TL;DR: Here's how it's likely about to play out:
    1. Studio Series becomes the "Black Series" line. The transition begins with the G1 movie, and as they start to get that blend right and in a year or so people are used to it, we see a few figures from other legacy media break in. Maybe a screen accurate Primal and Megatron, or somebody from a Japanese series (would be a great place to put Star Saber). The focus will be on accuracy. The only guys who will be headmasters are guys who were headmasters. Etc. This also means that it may expand in price points to allow for smaller characters to be sold without having to package them with larger ones. (Or as multipacks like the Arcee sisters).

    2. What we typically refer to as Generations (WfC) becomes the media line. Think of this as the ForceLink stuff we see on Star Wars shelves compared to the Black Series figures. We've seen it start to play out that way with the Netflix show. Those figures will feature characters from whatever the current show/comic/film Hasbro is trying to promote. That means, like Classics long ago, these guys will share names and in some cases appearance, but the goal isn't 1:1 recreation. They may also feature a diverse array of gimmicks.

    3. The media lines we currently see (RiD, Cyberverse, etc) go away. Some of those price points may be absorded in to SS to facilitate smaller characters, or the Generations:Media Line to support a few gimmick figures that dont fit in to current price points.

I'm starting to expect that 86 figures is just going to be an offshoot of the Studio Series line. Probably repaints of a mix of Studio Series and WFCER.

Honestly, I think I'd be down with that scenario. The spread of characters would help me save a bit of money as there are certain parts of the franchise I don't care to buy into

Why would studio series figures get repainted as 86 movie characters? And of the 86 SS figures leaked so far, there is no Grimlock, Wheelie or Gnaw in WFC. These will be new molds

If that's the case, I damn well better see the Beast Wars 2nd Movie included. Cuz I needs me a Flash Lioconvoy and Majin Zarak

How much y'all wanna bet that this 86 Gnaw is the Gnaw mold Hasbro would have used if he had won the fan poll last year that gave us Runamuck.

Makes me wonder if they have a Needlenose ready to go

And it would give them an avenue to release whoever they want, whenever they want, without having to cram it into a certain gimmick that the other line is currently playing with or within a certain time frame to all match.

They took over a year to finish Devastator, but it was a success. They could apply that same pattern to other teams. Compare the chaotic nature of all of these Earthrise Seekers. Some are at retail, some are exclusives, oh crap you can't get to a Walmart or missed a pre-order window and missed out? That sucks.

If they shift to Studio Series, you could sell Starscream...take a few months and sell Thundercracker....wait a bit long and sell Skywarp....but the promise is there. We have this line, we have our jet mold, and over time we will deliver these guys to you. You know the Starscream you buy in 2020 will match the Red Wing that drops in 2022.

Oh absolutely. And had he won we would've seen Allicon in Studio Series.

Told people all along the inclusion of the 1986 film into the Studio Series line isn't a far fetched notion. It is a Transformers film and if production of any of the next films hits a snag, it could be utilized as a filler entry to prolong the line.

Super lame move from Hasbro to make SS Ravage only available with Grindor.

Seriously, the only way to get a figure that should’ve been included with ROTF Soundwave is to purchase a repaint of a leader from 2 years ago?
