Nice! Thanks for posting. Interesting, I thought the MP and SS86 were closer in size, although the SS version isn’t that far off.

As mentioned previously, I own the MP so was going to pass on this but I recently changed my mind. MP still looks great. If I were to compare I’d say there are things I prefer about each.

Size comparison confirms to me that I already have a suitable sword for SS86, and I don’t mean by appropriating MP’s sword, most viable as it is.

Back when I got the Power of the Primes Dinobots I set about sourcing the weapons left out of those packs. I ended up getting a 3D printed sword for Grimlock. For some reason the person who printed it opted for rather large, and it’s huge in his hands!

I recently tested it out on the MP Grimlock and it’s just slightly smaller than the sword he comes with, so it fits him pretty well. It should be ideal for SS86.

I was thinking of showing comparison shots of how the sword looks in PP and MP’s hands, but as this is an SS86 appreciation thread, I think I’ll wait for that to arrive and include him in the shots.

By the way, working my way through Season 3 now. It was a slow start as I postponed continuing for a bit as I found it annoying. It has improved as I’ve stuck with it, though, but I agree, Grimlock’s characterisation is worse in this series. (I think he’s shrunk a bit too.) I think my favourite characterisation of Grimlock is probably the Marvel comics. At least

Also according the G1 and MP data-box things (those printed on the packages) he is intelligent. Below Optimus and Megatron, but way above average.

 

Some people are into case pics, so here's the one for Grimlock:

A lot of swords, including the MP one, don't work on Grimlock due to his claws. Well, if you rotate some sideways, then it could fit but then may look odd that way. The MP sword's hilt is just barely oversized (by like 1, maybe 1.5, mm), so if you try to force it in, you'll scuff paint off the hilt and/or Grimlock's painted claws. Turning sideways helps, but again, then it looks a little funny. That may give you a reference point until you get the figure.

I tend to find either (too) small swords or swords with long handles working the best. [custom chest window; nfs]


The Perfect Effect "Berserker" convertible buster sword / axe is in Grimlock's right hand. They come in several of their kits in multiple colors. They had stand-alone kits too but are now out of print (the mini ape kits came with 2). Their Honor Warrior and Dark Warrior figures come with the sword currently.

The Toyworld TW-D Combiner Sword is in his left hand. The handle does come off to reveal a 5mm peg, but it's too short for this figure. Otherwise, the handle acts as a 5mm coupler. I put in a spare 5mm peg (yeah, like most would just have those laying around...) so Grimlock can hold it and clear the claws. I may come up with a better handle extender later. I thought this was out of print, but I see BBTS has them up for pre-order: TW-D Combiner Swords

Have to annoyingly redo the neck pieces again (now for attempt #4) due to some weird air bubble issues that didn't happen the other times, argh. Making clear chest window and clear yellow (slightly orangey) neck pieces.

Thanks for the feedback. The one on the right certainly doesn't look out of style for Grimlock.

Here is the sword I was planning to use. The creator obviously designed it arround the G1 toy's style... and increased the size. I have included the MP Grimlock's sword below it as a point of reference for size:



As you can see it is slightly shorter, but it has a longer hilt. (Curiously both weapons for MP Grimlock have very small handles/posts, although they fit well.)

Looking at it just now , I see the red sword is actually slightly wider. It reminds me much more of g1's sword than the MP's, much as I like it. Cheap flakey paint job aside..*

From what you've stated, I'm thinking the handle won't be long enough, and the hand guard (which is wider than the MP's) may get in the way of the claws.

We'll see soon enough. If it's not suitable, it will be a mild disappointment, but it won't be the end of the world. He works well with just the gun, (I've noticed they seem to have sized that up for the SS86 compared to previous figures. I like it.) With his teeth and claws he doesn't really need the sword, I guess. And the red sword isn't a bad alternative blade for the MP.

(*I got the MP second hand, though reportedly 'just used for display'- and it's pretty good quality, but that sword came with the paint flaked off the hanguard. You'd have thought a premium figure would ... Oh, I'll stop grumbling now.)

 

My Grimlock's dinosaur arm came assembled backwards, Thanks God the arm doesn't have any pins and is just a friction joint, I popped it out and assembled it right. For a moment I thought that I got two right hands but looks like the dinosaur arms doesn't have a side lol.

Though, in all seriousness, imagine if Kingdom Waspinator had detachable limbs. I wonder how crazy the combos with Studio Series 86 Kup would look like.

 

The clear red paint doesn't like to stay on the chrome, which is a known issue.

The MP blaster does fit without issues and is actually smaller than the SS86 blaster.

 

Niiiiice, and I thought I was the only one around here who had that Galvatron.
