I just got SS Overload thanks to In Demand Toys.

How to put it... it's OK.

The vehicle mode is a brick, as I haven't seen in many years. The wheels roll, but it doesn't look like anything intelligible. Is it meant to carry stuff? It's not clear. Is there a cab? They didn't bother to put a ladder or even paint to suggest a human could get in there. it's more primitive than a LEGO representation of this kind of vehicle.
Its saving grace is some asymmetry, even if I am not sure it works for this thing...

The transformation is OK, pretty straightforward. No big surprises, but no pain points to report.

The robot mode is very limited. It's possible to twist shoulders and elbows, but that's it. No waist articulation, permanent ab crunch, and knees fold FORWARD, making posing impossible. Ankle joints here are a by-product of the transformation scheme. You can bend the block-shaped feet, but the result is not very flattery.

Update: the funny cap can be stored on its back, see picture.

Overload exists to form SS Devastator, and little else. I would neve spend $50 for this figure by itself.

Overall: 5/10 with bonus points for being part of a combiner.

    Bonus picture:
15 years later, I am not sure I would call this progress.

    Combined everything.
Size matters, I guess, but it ends up being an unstable statue more than anything else. I don't trust Rampage's "ankle" to survive long.
    Edit:
Some time passed, and we started having multiple reports of SS Devastator's ankles surviving months of being displayed in a standing position. So far, these few data points suggest there is no real concern on SS Devastator's ankles.

Yikes. The lack of articulation, especially in the legs, is disheartening.
Still, I'm in it for Devastator, so he's a buy regardless. Just wish there was more to him as an individual.

EDIT: Scroll down. As has been pointed out, Overload does have knees and ankles.

Why don't you try bending his knees and activating the ankle tilt to get a more ergonomically correct stance?
PrimevPrime shows it here in his review, at the 9min mark, up to 9:44. He looks great to me.

You've never seen an articulated dump truck before?

I'd wager that's what the cab-looking thing with windows is near the front.

There's ladders on the bumper, and the cab is fully painted.

I dunno, seems even from your pics the arms are heavily jointed. The top sets have elbows, the bottom set has double elbows, all four have swivels, there's outward movement and swing forward movement. A little more than a "twist."

As shown in the above video('s thumbnail, even) Overload has both knees and ankles. You just apparently didn't find them.

I'd cut him some slack. He arguably bears the most weight of all the Constructicons we've had so far. Corners had to be cut to make him work, yet going by these pics he still looks serviceable. Pretty stunning what Hasbro could accomplish in just 11 years since their non-combining Constructicons in ROTF's toyline.

It's a shame the same doesn't apply for his alt-mode.

Will there be a review for Devastator now?

I’ll also say Overload does more with the restrictions of his time than, say, Cybertron Defence Red Alert does with his. I mean, it’s pretty obvious we’re long past the quality days of the early 2000’s, but for his time CD Red wasn’t exactly stellar. He lacked in posability and design, being rigid and unwieldy with his giant rocket. Overload is a post-economic-decline leader class movie combiner who’s also arguably the most important component due to being under the most stress. I say he accomplishes more with those odds stacked against him than Red does with the benefits of his time.

The OP also neglected to mention his universal hips, yet decried the lack of a waist? I feel like that’s an understandable omission not only given the context, but the fact that waist swivels still aren’t a standard on movie toys due to how unconventional a lot of the robot modes and transformations are.

Guess this is a good example of “don’t base your opinion on one review.”

Funny, as the cab is clear as day, with a ladder molded on the side of it.

Absolutely, 100%, if I squint I can even see a second and third ladder. Or is that a fourth?

I wonder if they made him the crab-like former from the concept art, that would have helped with the figure.

I think it would've just just resulted in more pieces not disguised in alt mode.

I mean if anything the legs are the best hidden part of this guy.

    Initial impressions

    Overload:

    Positives
    • Evokes the concept art wonderfully, albeit the two legged version.
    • Fairly intuitive transformation, at least from robot to alt mode and back.
    • Not a flimsy leader, by any means. This guy is solid (obviously to bear most of the weight of the combiner), and probably can be used as a cudgel in alt mode if needed.
    • Feet are very stable as long as you remember to flip out the heel spurs, there's an ankle tilt too.

    Negatives
    • Alt mode is not particularly convincing, similar could be said of Scrapper and Scavenger though.
    • Could have done with more paint in places, for example the headlamps aren't painted, but not a major thing.
    • The exhaust, which pegs into the back of the shoulders, has already got paint wear on mine from pegging and unpegging.

    Devastator:

Bearing in mind I haven't had a lot of time to play around with Devastator, I just assembled him, and adjusted so he would stand), then I had to do grown-up things.

    Positives
    • Truly monstrous in person
    • Plenty of scope for fan-moding
    • Huge and bulky, barely fits in a detolf (had to remove a shelf)
    Negative
    • It feels unfinished in places, especially the head, and especially the vortex grinder 'hat'.
    • I worry about the longevity of some of the joints particularly the ankles and shoulder joints on Scavenger.

The vehicle feels like it got sacrificed for the robot and combined modes. Still pretty excited for it.

No need to worry, those ankles ARE going to break soon. This is what convinced me to sell the whole set on the same day I received Overload. As much as I love the diversity and complexity of this combiner, I feel very uncomfortable leaving it in combined mode for months in a detolf.
