    Funnier than Stratosphere was.

See, Jetfire wasn’t just old because “haha old man plane funny,” he was old because he was a direct tie to the Fallen, who was an ancient enemy, and thus had detailed knowledge no other character had. Even if he wasn’t played up as an old coot he’d still need to be older than any other character. His age also reasonably explained why he didn’t just join in with the hunt, because the dude wasn’t all there and wouldn’t exactly keep up with the others. And yet despite being a goofy old codger, he still had his moments of clarity like when he joined the battle and sacrificed himself to power up Optimus. It was rushed and clunky, but Jetfire’s character actually had purpose in the film and his age had plot relevance. Stratosphere’s did not.

Stratosphere was just an old guy to be old, and he didn’t even contribute to the final battle besides dropping Bumblebee off. Jetfire actually managed to put up a fight before being mortally wounded, and had a little moment of choosing to give his life to help the heroes win, which is something at least.

Yeesh, when ROTF has more thought and purpose put into its characters you know something is wrong.

Consider they played more gags about Jetfire being old, I’d be amazed if he wasn’t funnier than Stratosphere so that good, I guess.

The fact they decided to make ROTB Stratosphere a weird old man proves that the live-action crew didn’t (fully) learned their lesson.

I hope he changes after he absorbs the energon that revived Bumblebee.

But that’s just it. Stratosphere was just a vehicle (hyuk) for the heroes. Like the TLK submarine but thankfully allowed to transform and talk, but otherwise just as useful. He was only ever going to be a plot device and nothing more.

So the fact that they gave him a nigh-identical character to the only other large flying Autobot in the films was just really… dumb, if I’m honest. Like the guy is already phoned in, but you can’t even at least try and make him stand out? You’re going to use the same joke from the Bay trilogy that the majority of people didn’t like the first time?

I still don’t know why he didn’t join in the final battle. Like at all.

The more I think about ROTB the more I’m convinced the people making it didn’t. :lol

ROTB Stratosphere doesn’t seem like a mech who can fight. He’s kind of like Astrotrain mixed up with TF5 Daytrader.

My man could barely keep himself in one piece, had he been in the battle field he would've fallen to pieces before ever fighting any terrorcon lol

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that got Shatter vibes from her, like where the wings are positioned and placed. Definitely a early sketch design.

I'm going to be honest, it looks generic as shit imo

It certainly looks like it could probably do something in the final battle, but from there on out it looks like a Gundam.

It wasn't well used, but the Stratosphere design we got is better if you ask me.

    Really?
Lorenzo and Bay are still the producers and have laid things out before Cable came in. Cable himself said that Wheeljack for example was already designed the way he is prior to him coming onboard. Who else would be responsible?

While I think they took some of the old man gags too far (farting out a parachute? Ugh) he was still generally a fun character and useful.

    That didn't stop Jetfire!

Uh, the studio? The designers? Literally anyone. You're assuming it was Lorenzo or Bay without any evidence.

We also have artwork of WJ heads with fins so as far as approving wise that was Steven and probably the studio for the different look. But gotta fit into that mo.
What I was saying is that they played the yucks up a little more with him than Stratosphere. I’m not saying he wasn’t useful, he was.

This design looks so generic. People may not have liked the grizzled veteran appearance of the final character but at least it *had* character.

I do like the concept. I don’t mind Stratosphere since he was such a nobody, but the nostalgic part of me does miss ROTF Stratosphere with the exception of one nitpick, I didn’t really care much for his head/face. This isn’t better, but it’s a step in the right direction.

I can imagine this design can borrow the Voyager HFTD Lugnut's transformation.

Like a lot of other people have observed already, this got the Gundam Tallgesse vibe all over it. Not enough live-action "gotta signal some human stereotype" design elements in this, so no wonder it's not used in the movie, but that makes it cooler as a bot for me.

Looks ok, but it’s too human for me, doesn’t look enough like an actual airplane can form out of him. Especially those legs.

TBH a lot of this artists concepts for transformers don’t appeal it me at all. His scourge stuff straight up ignores that it’s a transformer and not some edgy mythical boss from a video game.

Any at all would be preferable. Otherwise it's baseless speculation.
