The original trilogy is about the restoration of democracy, and the prequel trilogy is about the fall of democracy, so naturally the sequel trilogy should be about the preservation of democracy, right? We should see the New Republic through its darkest days, but it should ultimately triumph in the end. Instead, the New Republic is basically destroyed halfway through the first movie in the trilogy and we retread the 'restoration of democracy' stuff from the original trilogy.

Nicely stated. I think that's exactly what I would like to have seen, with Luke, Leia and Han fighting to preserve their hard won victory alongside the new characters. That would at least have added a solid philosophical theme underlying the action and adventure instead of the aimless retread of the OT that we got, and it would have brought something new to the table and given the sequel trilogy a reason to exist beyond just "make more Star Wars, make more money."
