Voyager and Enterprise were horrible because of the people running it. They're gone now. I am very much in favor of a new series IF they can do it right. Update Classic Trek. Mix new tales in with retelling of old tales (with new spins). Break away from the stodgy format that restricted the later series while the rest of television moved into the 21st century. Allow the series to tell longer story arcs - maybe spend more than one episode on a planet, so that the galaxy won't seem like a hundred planets with a single town square and one sense of fashion. Trek has always been about exploring ideas and its characters. We JUST met these characters. We really don't know them for who they are, just for who they were in another life. Seeing this new crew was a novelty, but really, what do we care for them at this point? What would a new film bring us that really needs to be shown on a big screen? Action? Adventure? That's an element of Trek, but never its most important part. Look at it this way - we've previously had 10 Star Trek films, and, according to popular opinion, of them, at best, 2 were very good, 3 passable, and 5 that just stunk. Trek is not something that is set up for a cinema. It is designed for serialized story telling, and that means television.
They already did that on DS9, though. Actually, it's three very good movies (according to popular opinion and critical opinion): The Wrath of Khan, First Contact and Star Trek (2009). You can add The Undiscovered Country as another very good film according to critical opinion.
If grim and dark sci-fi is what you desire, then I suggest you stick with Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5 ands its ilk. Darker and edgier can make a series great, but please, leave Star Trek as the idealistic beacon of the future that saps like me can hope for. I know Roddenbery is looked upon as a sexist and socialist utopia fanboy (and not all of that is undeserved) but you know, in the midst of all the gritty and reaslistic future sci-fi, I like having one, just one, that shows that we can overcome worst aspects of our nature and be a unified force of honour and goodness to explore the stars. /rant
I actually always thought this would be great. When you would watch them years later in their own ship, you'd remember their young, and more impetuous years.
Fixed. It will happen eventually. Star Trek started on TV and it will always return to that medium. We just need some time to wash away the failures of Voyager and Enterprise. Odds are the next show will go back to the classic format - the Enterprise and its crew exploring space, although I'm not sure if it will be a reboot like the new movie or a follow-up to TNG with a new Enterprise and crew. The important thing is that it will be done without Rick "Sup dawg, I heard you like tits so I puts some tits in your Star Trek..." Berman.
Fixed. heheheh. I loved Voyager. One of my favorite Treks episodes is in Voyager. Blink of an Eye was a cool aspect of Time Travel, not really covered before... What if you could watch an entire civilization evolve right before you eyes, and your presence actually affected the views and religion of that society? That and I loved the Doctor. I enjoyed every Trek for a different reason. I'd hardly call Voyager crap.
Actually the sexism in TOS was a compromise that Roddenbery and NBC came too. He keeps Spock, and he projects tradional gender roles into the series. Watch the un-edited original pilot. Pike's first officer is a woman, nick named number 1. Played by Majel Roddenbery. She didn't test well, most people in the test acudiences (even the women) were like "who the hell does she think she is?"
I cannot believe real Trek fans hate Voyager. The first cpl of seasons were ruff but there were some great episodes in the later seasons. And yes, 7 was hawt. I admit Enterprise did not hold my attention at all when it was on the air, I eventually saw every episode later on and really enjoyed it overall. A new Trek series is inevitable. A show based on Captain Cameron would be great (wonders if anyone will get that). I really don't see why a new Trek series has to deal with the Federation either. Atleast Voyager and DS9 proved you don't have to have the Enterprise to be Trek. It doesn't have to be on a Bird of Prey either since the Klingons are pretty well explored at this point. Something along the lines of an advanced civilization like the Kelvan Empire from Andromeda or from M-33. One that has the technology to travel the great distances much faster, possibly like the travelers. I am sure that would open up the doors to seeing some really cool stuff and not constantly be hindered by the Prime Directive heh. Land on a planet full of savages and show them the power of your boom sticks!
1) Simpson's did it. 2) Twilight Zone did it before that. 3) I'm willing to bet it was done earlier than either of those. For the most part, if you were an adult Trek fan when Voyager first aired, the show offered next to nothing original. It was endless recycling of old stories, failure to live up to its premise or develop its characters, and a constant hitting of the reset switch. I find that those who most like Voyager are those who watched it when they were younger (and kids have no taste), and what was tired to the rest of us seemed new and original to them.
If V can get a new series why not Trek, plus they could cross market it. With the early numbers coming in from the movie it seems likely.
SHUT UP WESLEY. Who didn't ROTFLTAO when Beverly said that? I know I did. Seriously though I actually gave it some thought. In a Starfleet Academy there could be issues of racism (an environment where a bunch of different races are mashed into close quarters?) of peer pressure, academic pressure. All these things that afflict modern centres of learning could be addressed in a serious maner, yet handily sugar coated in a veil of Science Fiction. And because they're all still young, comedy and light heartedness could be done without being forced. And then, when thats all done after a couple of years, you can get a couple of extra series where these cadets end up moving onto ship placements, starting off within the Sol system and then gradually moving further outward. (Imagine! A cadets first alien shore leave after a month cooped up on a Starship!) They're still at the Academy, but the extra scope is there. Throw in a few big events to shake things up a bit, if its set after ST6:TUC, where there could still be some unrest after the Starfleet conspiracy and Klingon Terrorists... all being undermined my those crafty Romulans... and in the thick of it an idealistic young Cadet (preferably hot and female with a preference for tight Buck Rogers clothing) who is thinking; 'WTF have I let myself in for?' Then you could have a newscast sometime toward the end about Kirks death on the Enterprise B, ave a Kobyashi Maru test, and finish the whole season with the cadet crew graduating. I'd make it a bit like that TNG episode, Below Decks. Heheheh. Sweet.
