So seeing the trailer with the Franklin in it had me super excited since at first I thought mother of god they have an at this point old ass NX class ship flying around still. Though I did see the full design image on a website later and was slightly disappointing but it does have me wondering.

Is the Franklin's star-ship class one of the first federation ships after the NX? Or is it something along the lines of the Enterprise A where they made refinements to the design and fixed flaws from the previous version. It seems to be a bit more streamlines and looks a bit more rugged to the point where it might handle Warp 5 better thant he NX-01 did when it was being pushed.

One of the strangest comments I'll read today.

Yeah, it's actually a GREAT idea and a wonderful way to pay homage to not only Takei but Roddenberry as well. Very cool.

So OF COURSE someone STILL has to complain about it, lol.

Not to split hairs, but by "diversity" I believe you mean "pandering".

Well I found a reference to the Franklin being in a Pop-mech article about Beyond. Aaaaaand the Franklin is a warp 4 ship. Predating the NX-01 by a decade or more.

I think what is a bit odd is I've seen people treating it like he's the first one in Trek...which he isn't.

Damn that's really old then, wonder if at least in the Reboot Universe it served as he template for the NX-01 if that's the case. I'm really curious if they'll explain its background in the movie since I think in the first reboot movie they had a model of the nx-01 on display in a scene and it still looked like it did from enterprise.

This is the future we're talking about. I have little doubt that if they decide to go that route, that Sulu and his husband can have a child together without adoption.

Yup. In the next movie Sulu will decide to transition. Or better yet, Chekov. Yes, that's it. Make him a woman so they don't have to recast a male as Chekov.

What a bizarrely shortsighted and incoherent complaint.

Forward-thinking inclusiveness and diversity is literally one of THE MOST defining qualities of the ENTIRE franchise, ffs.

    WTF.

So enraged by the possibility of one non-straight person in a Star Trek movie he's not even making sense now.

EVERYONE IN STAR TREK AN' STAR WARS BETTER BE STRAIGHT OR ELSE GRRR URRR

    :rolleyes2

I have to agree. This is one instance where it does make sense.

Wow, people complaining about cast and character diversity in Star Trek, that is something I never thought I'd ever see. This is seriously the one franchise where this sort of shit is a non-issue.

    But here we are.

Would be relevant but this is the reboot universe, things are different here. I seem to remember that being the phrase.

    No, apparently not.

That'll be fine, just as long as this "I need to feel represented" thing covers ALL the bases. I want Kirk to get grotesquely fat that sues fast food drive-thru's, Spock & Uhura need to be in a bad marriage with a child that suffers from mental illness... or autism, McCoy should have a drinking problem that he calls "a disease" whilst dealing with male pattern baldness, and Scotty should start being offended by everthing in the name of "political correctness".

I didn't complain about squat, actually. I have no issue with Sulu being gay... just like I had no issue with him being presumably straight beforehand either. I don't care one way or another. I just pointed out exactly what these studios/movies - not just Star Trek here - are doing now for the sake of keeping the internet peanut gallery sedated.

That article also had some really cool cutaways of the Enterprise, Franklin and a swarm ship. I'd posted a link to it a while back, but for anyone interested here it is again.

Also have to say that I like that they're revealing Sulu as gay in Beyond. Like Hazekiah said, Star Trek has traditionally always been about forward-thinking inclusiveness and diversity, and this is something that is long overdue for the franchise.

It's kinda predictable, but I'm more than ok with Sulu being homosexual. Now, if it was either Bones or Chekov, I would start to question it. Kirk is usually the one mentioned, but Chekov and Bones were much bigger horndogs than he was in the original series.

Also, while I doubt it'll matter in the long run, Sulu does have a daughter in this continuity, so it's not like they're really chaning anything. They're just specifying something that was previously unknown.
