No way Abrams directs. Timeframe wouldn't allow.

I don't see how Abrams can possibly direct it if it shoots next year. He can produce and maybe write some the screenplay, but he is doing so much that I doubt he could fit it in. 2015 would be a great year for a new Star Trek movie because a four year wait is too long, but big science fiction movies like this should not be rushed.

By the way, does everything have to come out in 2015?

If it doesn't work out, he can always go back in time to re-boot the 3rd film.

2016 would make more sense - time to fit in Star Wars, AND it would coincide with Trek's 50th anniversary.

Abrams himself already more or less said that he'll very likely only be producing the next one, and as epically disappointing as that is, I trust he'll help bring on the right guy to take over directing.

All I know is that this is GREAT news. My biggest worry after Into Darkness was that we'd have another excruciating wait time until a third movie. The sooner, the better.

I feel he should wait until 2016. Into Darkness was great, and I want it to have a great sequel. However with Star Wars Episode VII: Revenge of the Seniors coming out the same year I feel he will be pressed for time, and that one, if not both, will seem rushed and bland.

Just pay Harlen Ellison's estate a whole bunch of money for his original City on The Edge of Forever script and then adapt it to add a subplot about Spock debating whether he should try to warn Vulcan about Nero and its effect on space/time.....or would that be too cerebral for the modern era of movies?

timeframe could allow JJ to direct both however I fear the quality of the movies would suffer as JJ wouldn't be able to do much of the post production stuff nor oversee it.

I cant see Disney taking this lightly if Abrams screws them over by choosing to do star trek 3 instead. Incoming law suit... Personally id prefer if he finished his star trek trilogy. I dont want some random doing the last in the trilogy. Abrams started it he should finish it.

I still don't like the idea that Trek and Wars now share creative DNA.

I'm hoping they wait to release it in 2016. That way Abrams can direct, it'll be released on the anniversary, and the only Wars movie it'll have to compete with is the first of the spin-offs. That said, if Abrams can still direct the third movie, and it doesn't suffer because of him also doing Wars, than I'll be fine with it being released in 2015. I would even skip going to see SW episode VII in theaters if that happens.

Considering just how big of a pile of dog crap Into Darkness was I'm not sure I even want a third movie.

But if it has no Abrams I might just go see it.

Into Darkness wasn't that good, in my opinion, but I like Star Trek and I like the new universe starting with the first Abrams movie...so I'm all for it. I think.
