Sunbow Bumblebee was never a Volkswagen. None of the Transformers in the show were depicted as real models of cars in it.

Inevitable? I wouldn't count on it. They said in the stream that the windows are painted black out of necessity owing to the engineering. If you really want blue windows, wait for Toyhax.

I had never noticed before now, but that model sheet has badly proportioned arms.
    They're too short.
Glad most figures don't follow that aspect of the model.

    It's a better Bumper than a Bee.
That reminds me. I really need to get a new head for mine.

Now that you mention it, It does.
And suddenly that listing for the Devastation two pack makes a lot more sense.

Those of you who are upset about Bee not being licensed. Why? I get it to a certain extent since his last mainline figure was licensed but at the same time none of the 86 figures with earth modes have been licensed vehicles (which is a shame imo but not surprising)

    Jazz - Not licensed
    Ironhide/Ratchet - Not licensed
    Ultra Magnus - Not licensed
    Brawn - Not licensed
    Prowl - Not licensed
    Cliffjumper - Not licensed
    Starscream - Obviously not licensed

The problem isn't the design itself.
It's that it doesn't make sense as a real world car disguise used by a Cybertronian hiding on earth.
The Penny Racer design worked fine in Micro Change where they were intended to be tiny robots disguised as actual Choro-Q toys.

Most of those are not good examples because while they are technically not licensed, most of them are skirting license issues by being close-enough designs with very similar proportions to the actual vehicles.
They're close enough to be believable as real world variant designs.
(Except Brawn. Brawn's just trying to be Brawn.)

This Bee is trying to be a life sized Penny Racer with features seemingly derived partially from the G1 toy and the animation model while simultaneously being generic enough to work as all 4 MC characters with minimal retooling.
That is probably why so many of us are finding it to be a very awkward looking figure.
It's doing too much all at once.

Genuine question because I don't know much about the production of the G1 cartoon and toys, was G1 Bumblebee ever a licensed Volkswagen Beetle?

It depends if the original Choro-Q toy required a license.
And I imagine it likely did.
So I'd say the answer is probably "Yes".

After a quick check of the line, I guess so,
"The toy line is highly popular and has become collectible, even outside Japan, due to its low price and its merchandising line which includes JGTC and various licensed car editions and has also spawned a series of videogames bearing the same name. The toy line has also lent its moulding to the Micro-Change and Transformers line of toys."-Wikipedia
"Originally produced in Japan, the manufacture subsequently has occurred variously in Taiwan, Macau and China. The models represent various makes and models of all kinds of actual cars, trucks, trains, and even planes and military and construction vehicles. There are even versions representing just about every bus and train line in Japan. Choro-Q are also produced in limited special runs for promotional purposes. Models are licensed and produced for automotive manufacturers and dealers, or as tchotchkes for marketing of other products and services. They even released a Major League Baseball line."-Wikipedia
That brings down my opinion of it a bit, no idea why they wouldn't license it when we recently got ROTB Wheeljack, unless it's pricey.

In the '80s, no. Hasbro and Takara didn't try to get licensing deals, they just lifted designs without asking, and car companies weren't yet litigious enough to go after them. When that changed in the late '90s-early '00s, that's when you see Hasbro and Takara start to make conscious design decisions to either avoid the need for licensing and make very generic cars, or lean into real-world accuracy and make the deals with the car companies. Once they finally broke through with Volkswagen, the original G1 Bumblebee toy has been officially licensed every time it's been reissued.
