That was completely different, though. The Devastator thing was an error that had nothing to do with licensing.

I think he's saying that since Bay wanted to do his own thing with naming Brawl Devastator, Hasbro just said "Screw it, name him brawl, they'll know the difference."

At least that's how it struck me.

Yup thats how I meant it. Obviously between the movie and Hasbro they had two different ideas on the name of the character.

While the Ferrari situation is slightly different. The toy is not a true representation of the Ferrari unlike Bumbleebee with the Camaro. Thus the licensing is not a key factor in the debate when it comes to the toy. So Hasbro delivers the name we accept while the movie has to concede with licensing.

It's not that big of a problem that Mirage is called 'Dino'. What the problem is IMO, is that Dino is called 'Mirage' in all other kinds of media, like videogames, books, comics, etc. etc. If this character was called Dino from the beginning it would still suck, but now everywhere this red Autobot is called 'Mirage', except in the movie. And that is just fucking stupid.

Am I the only one here who prefers the names Dino and Que? I actually think they're good names (from what little I've seen about the characters' personalities and such).

Prefer? Eh..not really. With a deep Italian accent, the word "Mirage" just rolls off the tongue so smooth.

I do like them though. Dino ends up a multifaceted homage to Alfredino Ferrari, Beastwars Dinobot, and the Dinobots, because of both his name and rouge personality. And Que is absolutely spot on personality wise as well.

It's not like they're named Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde...

My gripe is that "Dino" doesn't reflect the design it has at all.

Bumblebee is yellow and has wings. Ironhide is designed to look big, tough and powerful. optimus is optimus. even Jolt's named reflected the Chevy Volt he was. "Jolt the Volt"

Dino reflects less a sentient alien robot and more the purple apatosaurus.

And with regards to Wheeljack, they can call the SLS Soundwave who is an evil decepticon yet Mercedes isn't cool with them naming the E550 a heroic autobot character.

you got it wrong friend. Bay did not want to call Brawl Devastator in the first movie. Devastator was Brawl's placeholder name so people would not know the real name of the D-con til the movie came out. ONly when it came down to editing, the editing team did not catch it and his name was left as the placeholder name. He was never meant to be called Devastaor at all.

    Same with Wheelie in ROTF

Screenwriters called him Wheels, we call him Wheelie

I'm starting to think that 'Dino' and 'Que' are names that will be used only in the foreign-language versions of DOTM (those released in Hispanic countries). Which would make Nelson only a partial liar.

Maybe Ferrari shouldn't have named him Dino since the character was meant to die to begin with! Now we have one less Autobot death, they might as well not kill any Autobot in the movie since they decided to just randomly cut what would have been an amazing scene out of the film...... or that dude said that "Dino" wouldn't die, but Mirage would, yes I know I'm a genius.
