So, in the "Armada" episode did anyone have the thought
that the Starscream clones were going to be seeker variants like the ones seen in Transformers Animated?

No, because they already exist in the Aligned continuity.

I thought that was what was going to happen until most of them got killed by Megatron.

Predictable as it might have been if they'd done it, the scene did still resemble Animated Starscream and his clones. I also had the feeling it might happen until we saw they all looked identical.

Somehow, I get the feeling that the entire point of the Starscream story in this episode was to allow him to produce his own replacement T-cog that he could harvest out of a perfectly matching donor.

Although I don't think it was the entire point I think it's going to be a huge part of it. Although since his clones appeared to be burning bridges for him left and right even if he does get a t-cog from his recently deceased clone he needs someone to install it which may not be a readily available option.

Then there is the potential that there's an "issue" with the clones since I don't think we have gotten anything on how good/bad cybertronian cloning tech is. Early degradation of the organ is one potential complication, or just overall defects since the lab was inside for most intents and purposes a derelict.

EDIT: On topic, the thought honestly never even crossed my mind.

LIES. It was obviously SS#3. Geez, guys, don't you have eyes? /jk

On topic, however, I really do believe the only reason that all happened was either an easy way to get SS a t-cog, or halfway through production of the episode someone realized "wait, this is a horrible idea!" and scrambled to "fix it".

Not that I didn't enjoy the episode. Loved it to pieces, simply because it was so very WTF. Prime Starscream, out every other one, is probably my favorite. Now if only the staff would stop picking on him and let him shine a little more. He gets the short end of the stick almost every time he appears. =/
