I'm just wondering is there any explanation for soundwaves original cartoon alt mode? Did he just turn into that or could he become machinary and computers and things to let him blend into his environment like a robot chameleon?

I always called it Tree as a kid, and I'm sticking to it. Also, all the rest of the trees, are also Soundwaves. Not clones, just also Soundwaves. There are many Soundwaves, and they all share the same single brain. And, that's what I'm sticking to.

They are all over the Autobots side of Cybertron, and the Autobots never noticed.

It's almost like they're...robots in disguise or something.

I always figured Soundwave's Cybertronian mode was a lamp post and he could just blend in anywhere.

Comes in handy when you are doing reconnaissance for the Decepticons.

Well, technically, the one we know is Soundwave, is a communications tower.

Why do people always mention this extremely brief scene from one episode? Is the lamppost mode that iconic?

    I have theories.
Unique use of his transformation? Does this mean all the Transformers have the ability to stop transforming midway?
Was this his alt mode on Cybertron?

Not sure if you’re confused or I am

I was trying to suggest that his alternate mode is a communications tower

    And that is his disguise

And, I'm suggesting that, that would be literally what he is, isn't he?

He is also a robot who's job is to be a communicator. Who then turned into a tower. Which makes him a communication tower, not just in disguise, but also in function.

That's... that's what Transformers are. They turn into things for disguise. Soundwave was disguised as a lamp post. That is literally the explanation for his lamp post mode. He's in disguise.

(And yes, it was a lamp post, it says so in the episode's script.)

Yeah but he's right outside the autobot's base disguised as a leaning forward letter T and it's not like he's a low level grunt or anything. Him and Starscream are almost always stood right next to Megatron.

I guess it’s been a long time since you’ve seen the first episode

Being known or unknown really isint an issue

He is in Disguise as a Lamppost (or communications tower), and it’s an effective Disguise as he wasn’t the only one on the street

Pretty certain that's a lamp post. Not sure why you'd have two communication towers right next to each other - and therefore give a hint that there's something awry to the character one is spying on. And yes, there is a soft yellow light coming from the ends of the arms.

Likewise why would you need two light post that close to each other

Even in NYC they are more spread out then those 2 seemed to be

And I still don’t see any lights, seems to me that’s just the inside of his arms

And I got to modems close together
