Confession time: that Decepticon logo I modelled here? Well, I kind of had an ulterior motive in doing it. It's part of my final project in my 3D modelling class. Here's what I've got so far: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/31706226/ I'm modelling him in a very basic standing pose, and then I'll move him around a bit once that's done. The project is due a little under a month from now, so you should be seeing the final version the beginning of May. EDIT: Stupid me, copied in the wrong link.
Got a shot of his back now: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/31803229/ I'm going home for Easter, so progress should speed up once I get my comics and especially the toy for reference (having a physical object to look at is much better than looking at pics online). Also, the wireframe, for anyone who's interested: http://www.antiochforever.com/wrongplot/3d/Wireframe4-13.PNG
coming along nicely. A little advice though... Try to chamfer your edges. I'm not sure what program you are using so the terminology may be a little different, but chamfering the edges will give your objects more polygons for light to bounce off of. It will give the object more depth.
Excellent start, d00d. I agree with Primus' advice; nothing in the real world has a perfectly sharp edge (not even a blade, on a microscopic level). What app are you using?
I'm using Lightwave 8.5. I've never heard the term "chamfer" before, but I'm sure Lightwave has an equivalent command. I'll probably save that until the end, though, since right now I'm mainly concerned with getting it all put together.
Aha! Welcome to my world! OK; the term in Lightwave is bevel; when you make a primitive, press "n", and you will get a requester with a bunch of numeric input fields. About half way down you'll see one marked radius; put in a value and you'll see your box will have bevelled edges right off the bat. Failing that, you can use the bevel tool to bevel individual faces afterwards. Also, if you can afford it, get the plugin Vertibevel. it will let you bevel groups of polys at the same time. I use it a LOT. Lightwave 9 will have a similar tool, but so far I find Vertibevel easier to use. Any other questions, just ask.
Thanks; I'll play around with that a bit and see what I can get. For now, though, enjoy this full body shot that includes the preliminary work on the legs: http://www.deviantart.com/view/31957882/
hmm 3700? is that faces or triangles? It seems a little excessive for what you have there... but I guess since theres no limit are you texturing or animating him as well?
Not sure if 3700 is faces or triangles. I just clicked the Statistics button and it that's what it said. I don't plan on animating him (not yet, anyway... I'm taking 3D animation next semester), though he will be textured before he's finished. The legs have been lenghtened a bit, and feet have been added: http://www.antiochforever.com/wrongplot/3d/Progress4-17.jpg For the moment, though, I'm taking a break to work on Laserbeak: http://www.antiochforever.com/wrongplot/3d/Extra4-21.jpg
So your Soundwave is almost ready, you are starting Laserbeak, does that mean you are gonna make Ravage too?
Just Laserbeak for now. I might do Ravage over the summer, or something. EDIT: Though I may recolor Laserbeak into Buzzsaw and have both of them flying around. I'll just have to see. FURTHER EDIT: Here's an updated shot of Laserbeak. Still missing the head and feet, but otherwise the modelling's about done on him.
