I have been thinking of making the print files available but they are not really ready for other folks to print. There are around 160 parts spread over 5 build plates (my build plate is 220mm x 220mm). Plus some of the parts need to be printed separate because tinkercad refused to sit them flat, so I had to tell cura to lay them flat or they printed badly.

Almost everything is 3d printed, the only parts that aren't printed are the pins for the flat panel hinges, these all used 1.75mm abs filament as pins (works well, the curve keeps them from falling out).

The print includes lots of 5mm posts (most of the joints are 5mm posts). I did need to use a 5mm drill bit to widen the holes so the posts would fit (holes are set to 5mm while the posts are 4.75mm, still a little too tight though).

So it would be a difficult build for someone not familiar with the assembly, I would need to write some instructions.

I didn't use any screws in this print but I think for the next one I design I will, they would make firm joints much easier to achieve.

I would also like to fix the elbows so they are tighter/more durable, just not sure if I can get the arm apart to swap out the pieces.
He also needs new thigh parts as the current ones only just allow enough range of motion to get into alt mode. I keep having trouble getting everything to align in alt mode because the knees won't collapse far enough :(

    Soundwave can never lose.

What file types does tinkercad export? Maybe I could fix the problem parts with sketchup.

    Got some stickers done!

I would have posted this around a week ago but life got in the way.

I also reprinted laserbeak, now his wings stay attached, yay! He still needs a coat of paint to do the eyes and such.

I still need to reprint Arcadewave's thighs to fix some of the gaps in alt mode and a may do some more stickers. I'd like to put some kind of game display on his chest, but the curved surface makes it harder.

So I just painted up the reprinted Laserbeak and I reckon he's looking pretty good.

Sorta looks like a Spider-Man version of Laserbeak.
    I keep hearing Homer singing

    "Spider-Bird"
    "Spider-Bird"
    "Does whatever a Spider-Bird does"
"Can he swing, from a web?"
    "No he can't, cuz he's a bird"
    "Look out!"
    "Here comes a Spider-Bird"

    He, he :)

    Anyway, pics

    DSC_0316 (Small).JPG

P.S. Anyone else think that a real life "Spider-Bird" sounds kinda terrifiying? Like a spider covered in feathers that holds its legs to each side as wings and flies around looking like a bird until POW! You just got Spider-Birded!
Sorry for getting side tracked :)

You make me sad. My designs are pathetic. I hate my miserable existence now.:cry  Why must you do this to us with your awe-inspiring skill?!?!

Aww, don't be sad, practice makes perfect :)
Or in this case practice and better tools (a 3d printer) makes better.
Don't know if you ever saw it but I did do a kit bash a while ago of Jango-Fett and the BTTF II Delorean, called it the ManDelorean :)  (careful it's pretty raw)
I count Arcadewave as my first bot I fully designed, no cutting appart existing figures or model kits for this guy.

Here's a link to the ManDelorean thread. He worked ok and the idea is sound but his bot mode is rather derpy. Having the freedom to fully design your own parts is great and really ups the quality of what you can make. Arcadewave's bot mode is miles ahead of the ManDelorean's.

My school has a 3D-printer, that can't even have the objects removed from the workplane, without it it getting torn. It's kind of sad, but I can't afford a 3D-printer now, though I'll use 3DHubs to find a place to print near me.

The printer I'm using is a really cheap reprap clone so I figure the results from it are pretty much the bottom end of 3D printing.

I fould with pla rafts were easy to remove but with ABS things got tricky.
Initial I had parts not adhereing to the raft correctly and lifting/warping during printing when using ABS, so I had to reduce the "first layer air gap" setting in cura from 0.25 (good for PLA) to 0.12.
This stopped the lifting but has made parts rather hard to remove from the rafts, a hobby knife helps.
ABS also needs a heated enclosure, which my printer does not have, so I used a large cardboard box to keep heat around the printer.

I'm pretty sure if you print ABS too cool you will get weak layer bonds which could make the print come apart, I print at around 235c with the bed at 100c (highest my bed will go :(  )

This is so incentive, and awesome. I love the Autobot/ Decepticon side panel idea.

Awesome work. This makes me think of that one Marvel comics issue where Optimus and Megatron played a video game to settle their war, and Optimus blew himself up because he only won by cheating.

Thanks, it's really nice to know that people like how he turned out :)

I'd kinda like to get a better printer and re-make him with better joints.
Maybe some day. It's not really in the budget at the moment though.

I'd also like to make a Shockwave that turns into a Tron light-cycle arcade machine, I reckon there could be some fun transformation to be had there.

    Yes please!

As someone who just built their own custom arcade cabinet, I really appreciate the reference. I'd love to have on of the original Soundwave-Cabs sitting proudly on mine :)
