Adam Goodman Michael Bay pandemic Lockdown Thriller Songbird – Deadline

Yes, this is an actual production that's going to go down. Details are few and far between. Not certain what it's going to be like or what the angle will be, although it's obviously a Bay-produced film, and it's said to be in the, "spirit of Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield." Does that mean it's going to be found footage? Not certain it's something I'll be interested in, as films like Paranormal Activity have never been my thing, but there it is.

I know the subject of this film might relate to a touchy subject that has had a new rule posted in response to events in recent months, so please try to keep discussion relevant to the movie and not turn it into discussion of...well...you know in contexts that don't have to do with the film.

Songbird First Look Released: Apocalyptic Thriller Starring Riverdale's KJ Apa, Produced by Michael Bay

The film follows Nico (Riverdale's K.J. Apa) and Sara (Descendants' Sofia Carson), two star-crossed lovers who have never been able to meet in person due to COVID-19 lockdown protocols. In the world of the film - which is set in 2024 - the virus has now mutated into a significantly-accelerated disease called COVID-23, forcing the infected to stay in quarantine camps.

“It's a dystopian, scary world, but it's a romantic movie about two people who want to be together, but they can't,” director and co-writer Adam Mason explains in the article. “It’s Romeo and Juliet, but they’re separated by her front door and by the virus.”

The film made headlines when it attempted to start production earlier this year -- first for trying to film while the real-life lockdowns were in place, and for being hit with a "do not work" order from SAG-AFTRA. Nevertheless, the film still boasts an ensemble cast that includes Demi Moore, Bradley Whitford, Paul Walter Hauser, Craig Robinson, Peter Stormare, and Alexandra Daddario, and was able to be made with strict safety measures in July. Production reportedly lasted 17 days, with socially-distant zoning, frequent testing, and small crews being implemented.

“We were kind of trepidatious, but still very much amped and excited to get to work,” Apa explained. “It was really eerie, but the way we shot was every actor’s dream.”

And while the film's turnaround might seem a little jarring to some -- especially as the real-life pandemic continues to rage on - Carson believes that the film's message will make people want to watch it.

“Even though this is the pandemic thriller and it's suspenseful and terrifying, the heart of the story is hope. It’s the hope that is represented in Sara's character and the love between Sara and Nico. In our never-ending dark night, the songbird sings a song of hope.

Ah, fuck, Michael Bay. Oh, wait, he's producing it. Which means it might actually be good. Woohoo.

Not my kind of movie, and I think it is a bit of fear porn that I don’t subscribe to honestly. However, I do think it’s a good time for creators to work on smaller, more creative, and original projects like this that don’t require major studios or millions of dollars. It would be nice if Joss Whedon made another project like Dr. Horrible right now considering that we only ever got that musical because of the writers strike.

The timing of the movie feels off; if I'm being honest.

I fucking called it months ago. I said that years from now, people would be making horrible love movies about two lovers torn apart during this time. But, god I didn’t expect anyone, even Micheal Bay, to shit something out so quick.

And also? Fuck all the “it’s a bright light” bullshit. They are trying to cash in on a pandemic that has killed thousands of people worldwide, because it’s so relevant you everyone knows of it. And thats honestly even worse then this movie could ever be.

    ..."COVID-23."

Even for Bay, this is flabbergastingly irreverent. I'm honestly taken aback by this.

Looking at the title my first thought was that Marvel was making a movie about The Thunderbolts character.

Michael Bay's Pandemic Thriller Songbird Heads Straight to VOD

STXfilm will debut Songbird on PVOD outlets on Dec. 11. It will also eventually stream on a yet-be-named streaming service.

"The pandemic has affected every aspect of our business, from production to release," said STXfilms head Adam Fogelson. "But Songbird demonstrates that a nimble studio like STX can find effective and profitable ways to make their movies work, as we have similarly with Greenland and My Spy during these challenging times. The show must go on."
