I decided since I've got so much free time on my hands,(school's out untill 8/24) to try to learn something new. So I'm going to become a First Responder with our Volunteer Fire Department. I figured it's a great way to help out, since they've been short handed lately, and I've got some medical training already from my Nursing Assistant days. This should be fun!!
The world is a better place because of volunteers, good on ya bro. I frequently volunteer my time in my community. Plus, it's great for resumes. Cheers.
Thats an awesome step to take, its a great choice of volunteering, and everything I would like to be?
i hope that you really like the work and might even find a way to keep going. I started as a 3rd party (now called First Responder) with a volunteer squad. the first few weeks with the crews was hard because of all that noob and building trust thing. still, after that it became easier and had a blast. i really hope you do everything you want with this. good luck and enjoy the experience.
That's really cool man. Being a Police Officer i get the opportunity to work with First Responders and Medics all the time. I am a First Responder myself and you would be surprised out how often that very valuable training comes in handy. Good luck and if you need anything just feel free to ask.
I'm studying the manual right now, and lots of it seems to mesh with the training I recieved as a Nursing Assistant. Once I fill out my application the cheif told me I can begin riding along on medical calls to get a feel for what to do. I doubt I'll have may problems getting along with the other s since I've known the people at the Fire Station for 3 1/2 years now. In fact my wife asked " You've been here for 3 years and you just now decided to do this?".. I figure this will also be a great asset in my other job driving the School Bus, since it's always a good idea to know what to do in an Emergency. Thanks for all your support guys, I hope others may decide to get involved in something like this as well!!
Didn't want to start a new thread for an old topic: I finished my EMR (what they call a 1st responder now) class today. That means I'm finally legal to perform my duties. Until now, I was able to go on calls, but I couldn't touch anyone, or even ask them a question. After 4 1/2 months it's nice to be able to pitch in more actively. Next up: Emergency Vehicle driving, (which should be a breeze, since in my day job I drive a school bus) followed by Brush Fire class, then Firefighter 1 class. Wish me luck!
I hope you don't drive the school bus the same way you would an Emergency vehicle..j/k. Congrats on completing your courses..and good luck!!
The world needs more people like the OP. Willing to give back to their community, and less lazy, greedy bastards like myself.
