Because the movies went way to far with that. Almost every bot is an incomprehensible grey blob.

Pacific Rim/WfC/FoC it. Have those complex gears under solid plates. It's just less messy that way. A big part of art is not being too simplistic as to alienate the audience from your ideas but being simple enough to get it across effectively without distracting them with useless details.

The movies never found this balance. Until now.

 

Don't get me wrong, Grimlock still has a great design, no denying. It looks sick and sleek...it's just that I personally don't like that. But like you said, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum...

 

Have this narrated by Morgan Freeman and put it in the trailer or at the beginning of the film and you'd get a excellent start to the epicness.

Yeah We've seen them - Tunakaan's Exceptional TF4 Artwork spreads like wildfire across the internet - Especially on Facebook - and yet nobody credits him

 

either they try to integrate some of the characters the altmode kibble like the tires, doors, roof bits, etc. inside their bodies making them look like makeshift internal organs for the robot mode hence everything now looks smooth & sleek which they probably learned from the Prime/Beast Hunters design bits

 

Will we have worse toys?

If it is true, (probably yes), and under the circumstance of the revealed new Leader Optimus Prime, I'm afraid it would be a good excuse for making shellformer-like toys because there are fewer vehicle parts hanging now.

It's like they're moving more to have Optimus look like a Medieval knight. I do really like Bumblebee though, he looks like an actual warrior now.

Man this is the first Bay movie I'm legitimately hyped as shit.

I think these look freaking amazing. And while I loved the first designs from movies 1-3, these redesigns have re-peaked my excitement for AOE something fierce.

As long as the robot mode isn't a jumbled up mess of metal spikes, wires and gears everywhere I'm good. And if Optimus, Bee and Grimlock are anything to go by the aesthetic of AOE is going to be the best one yet.

I certainly don't expect good Transformers fiction to come from it (that's what the comics are for) but since this is the first time I actually LIKE the designs I just can't wait to see them in action.

 

Optimus certainly has a different face and head. Looks so much more streamlined in his face and more angular? I totally agree, he does have that samurai look to him, must be the "skirts" by his waist and yeah Bee looks more ready to fight as a warrior.

Grimlock looks pretty toothy, almost like way too much teeth. I'm going to be very interested in seeing how Bay explains it all.
