So what is Hoist's job in the IDW comics?

Feel kind of awkward starting a new thread for this, but there doesn't seem to be a general question thread here in the comics section.

Anyways, I dropped More Than Meets The Eye, thirteen issues in, but I'd always wondered if Hoist is still a doctor in that series or not. He's not shown working with the other medics in the med-bay, and I know that he has his own workshop. I know that in his own spotlight, he mentions he's a maintenance engineer (or something like that.) So, what does he do?

Did Roberts ignore the fact he's a doctor and revamp him to do something else?

He's a space engineer. Presumably he's seldom seen because he's often in the bowels of the ship, keeping the Lost Light running. Hoist is robot Isaac Clarke. More or less.

In his own words in his Spotlight issue, Hoist is a "mid-ranking maintenance engineer", yeah.

We see him work on non-living machines in that issue, so I assume that's what he usually deals with, but it's not out of the question that he might dabble in some basic medical stuff too. My girlfriend brought to my attention a few days ago that whenever Hoist is in a situation where there are other wounded TFs in the comics, he's always seen making a beeline for them.

For example, in the old ongoing when Bumblebee was shot by that one dude (before Jazz shot the human), Hoist is seen holding onto him and covering the wound. It's shown again in the latest RiD flashback.

Hoist also seemed to know that Swerve was bleeding out/dying and not just lightly injured in Spotlight: Hoist, saying that it was urgent that they get him to a medbay.

When the Lost Light was attacked by the Legislators, Hoist is again seen attending to/protecting an injured Dipstick.

So yeah, not out of the realm of possibility that he might have some medical training, even if it's only in the Cybertronian equivalent of "first aid".

Going back to the G1 original bios, mechanical and medical skills definitely have a certain degree of overlap. In the case of IDW, Hoist seems to be a "maintenance" guy in the general conventional sense (he repairs machines)... though going by his original bio, it makes it much more clear that he was intended to be more of a doctor (concerned with the 'maintenance' of living robots, not appliances).

I kind of lament Hoist's medical aspects being pushed into the background. I liked the way he bridged that gap in his original files. At BotCon, James Roberts was heard to cite the relative lack of doctor/medic types in Transformers. It seems like he never took Hoist that way.

I know that Hoist's spotlight frustrated me, but it's such a shame that his medical abilities might have been dropped. Reading the toy bios make it obvious that he's a doctor, especially when a few of them compare him to Ratchet.

It makes me sad that even though he gets a decent amount of toys for a B-list/C-list character, he's virtually ignored in fiction.

While I actually like the "I'm not insane so I don't really stand out all that much" thing they have going with him, I do wish that like you all, that his medical skills weren't played down. I'd like to see them use him as a...well, like a mob doctor kind of. Ratchet and Firstaid can't get to everyone, so if you need a fix but don't care how it looks, you go to Hoist's shop. Functional, practical, but not pretty.

There's over 200 characters on the Lost Light, not everyone will get a chance to shine. The fact that he got a Spotlight is pretty good compared to others who have literally only been in one panel over 31 issues.

I wish we had more mini-series and spotlights about every single character on the Lost Light. There's got to be something going on somewhere?

Which he only got because of his toy coming out. D: Hoist's spotlight frustrated me in a lot of ways, and one of the reasons why is because his medical knowledge never came up.

I always thought Hoist was more of a family doctor compared to the paramedic/surgeon level characters like Ratchet and First Aid. He can most likely do light repairs and diagnose when a bot needs to go see a specialist.

He doesn't really have a perfect human medical analog... dietician? Personal trainer? Family doctor?

His role is "maintenance", which seems to place him on that line between keeping people running, and keeping a car running. I remember his old bio stressing how "even Optimus Prime" had to submit to his maintenance check-ups... no exceptions! He doesn't really fix major injuries/damage, so much as keep everyone tuned up and operating as they should... I suppose if he encountered a serious issue, he'd refer his patient to Ratchet?

To me he's the Autobot equivalent of either a general practitioner or a family doctor.

He's the guy you go to for regular checkups and for when you're feeling funny. If it's something a minor, he'll deal with it, but if it's serious enough, he'll refer you to Ratchet or one of the other medics.

That's his tech spec from the Generations toy. Calling him a family doctor seems to be the closest fit.

On a semi-unrelated note, wouldn't Hoist noticed was wrong with Tailgate when Tailgate turned out to have that fatal disease in More Meets The Eye? This is assuming that Hoist is still a doctor in that series and makes everybody undergo regularly scheduled check-ups of course.

If Ratchet (who's pretty much considered the best of the best in regards to medical care) missed the signs of Tailgate's disease the first time around, I doubt that Hoist would've noticed even if he DID still practice medicine.

Yeah, but isn't Ratchet's specialty in repairs? I doubt that he's been trained (or something) to notice such stuff. The toy bios, on the other hand, seem to imply that one of Hoist's specialties is noticing such stuff, but as others have said, Hoist isn't probably a doctor in the series.

In IDW, Ratchet is pretty much a medical superman... or perhaps more accurately, a Sherlock Holmes. He notices everything. He's diagnosed practically invisible major and minor conditions after just watching characters walk around a bit.

I know that's to show that he has millions of years of experience as a doctor, but maybe his medical expertise is a little overplayed. I love Ratchet and all, but I really want him to step out of the spotlight for a bit so First Aid can have his opportunity to shine.

And yeah, Hoist is the only character that Roberts reinvented that kind of disappoints me. I prefer the cheery family doctor over someone who, by his own admission, is "not particularly chatty, handsome or clever".

Off topic, I'd like to see more First Aid too, but it doesn't need to be him as a doctor. The story of killing Pharma breaking his brain is more interesting to me.
