I’ve been getting back into animated and I’m trying to figure what was gonna happen with this boy. Cause obviously they kept adding more Constructicons for a reason and this also exist. Does anyone have a source on the concepts for him? Like that supposed episode where Bulkhead was brainwashed, or if Skipjack was gonna be the pants to Devastator like they joked about in Erector’s hall of fame video? Is any of it even true?
I'm pretty sure this was just a little doodle that was placed within that Collecters Club issue that talked about Season 4. And the Skipjack being Dev's pants thing came from the Almanac? At least I think so. Combined with all that we know I think the only Constructicons that were gonna be in the show (that would form Devastator) were Scrapper, Mix, Dirt Boss and possibly Skipjack, though I think its likely that only the three would turn into him and I think Skipjack was just added later. The episode the image of Devs was used for was titled "Turf War" where the Autobots are caught in the middle of a conflict when Dirt-boss and his boys discover a 'new way of becoming the big-bots of Detroit" One has to assume that means they were gonna learn how to combine.
If I recall correctly the Allspark Almanacs stated that Devastator was considered for the finales of both seasons two and three, but ultimately it never came to fruition.
The hall of fame video was indeed real, but due to legal shenanigans or somesuch no one will ever see it again. Some the art for it still exists though, like these fake reference pages from issue #59 of the magazine:
That’s an absolute cuck move. Thank you for this though! This is exactly what I was trying to find. So when you say fake, are they estimations to what was in the video or are they just guesses?
So like, I dunno about prior to Season 3, but after Season 3, the plan was to have Devestator for Season 4 (that's why there were no toys, they were waiting for the rest of the team to be introduced). When Animated got cancelled, it obviously never appeared.
In other words, the video was heavily tongue-in-cheek featuring entirely fictional plans for other versions of Erector, so in other words, everything in that video was "fake" in the sense that it was created only for the video itself.
So that means the Devastator concept was also fake. Or that is to say if there was a Devastator he’d be a different design.
I remember for a time one of the commissioned designs for Erector for the joke video as a beaver was on DeviantArt, but it was taken down by the one who drew it for whatever reason.
I remember Erector somehow, magically, becoming part of the finalists for the Hall of Fame. Namely because it was kind of a joke about how pointless the Hall of Fame really was given nothing ever came of it and people got so upset about people pushing a bot whose sole significance was, really, having an unintentional dick joke for a name. In fact, I believe Erector actually had the most that came out of the Hall of Fame simply because they had to make the gag video for Botcon that year. Didn't matter if none of it was actually real, it was still hilarious.
That's what happens when you write "for the next season.". Somethings you promised would show up never come to fruition.
True, but that's just the occupational risk of long-term storytelling. I still infinitely prefer that over cramming all of your best eggs into the first season and then scrambling messily to find plot threads to sustain future seasons.
There was definitely an Animated Devastator in development. I remember hearing that before Omega Supreme became the big wham character of Season 2, it was originally going to be Devastator, hence the concept for the Constructicons still being made into the show. I think Devastator was also considered for the big-bad of Season 3, but ultimately three Omega Supreme sized-bots was a bigger step up than one Omega Supreme sized bot. From the hints about season 4 we got it seems like Devastator was likely to finally happen until season 4 didn't. I don't think I ever really considered Erector or Skipjack canon since the latter was the recolour of the former, who was designed as a joke, but I could still definitely see Bulkhead factoring into Devastator somehow.
