How many here read and were fans of the original Mantlo Micronauts from Marvel?

I just got the War of Kings Aftermath Omni: Realm of Kings and it had some of the Marvel Micronauts characters.

So where's the character split of what Marvel gets to keep vs IDW? The original Diaclones?

I'm a huge fan of Mantlo's Micronauts. It's one of my favorite 1980s Marvel series.

What Marvel got to keep are the characters and concepts they created from scratch. They used a bunch in their 1990s/early 2000s Captain Marvel series, too. Enough to reveal that when Rick Jones switches places with Genis-Vell, it's actually the Microverse he goes to, not the Negative Zone.

So, characters with no toy representation which Marvel created to flesh out the cast, like Mari and Bug, Marvel flat-out owns. Anything that came from a Microman toy, like Baron Karza, Acroyear, Space Glider, Biotron, etc., Marvel could no longer use. They are still able to use Commander Rann as long as he doesn't look like the toy or call himself Space Glider or something, and they can still use Acroyear if he doesn't wear his traditional armor and use the name Acroyear. And Marvel created the term "Microverse", so they get to keep that as well. That's why IDW has to use the term Microspace.

wasp went to the microverse while everyone through she had died in the comics also and it was in the ant-man movie also!

Yeah marvel owns all non toy versions. Bug was going to be in the first Gotg movie in the first draft. It's the same with other comics marvel did not own also like rom they own almost everything from that book but roms robot mode and transformers they own death head and circuit breaker. (and neo-knights?) 2001 they own machine man and Godzilla they own red ronin just to name a few. Of course marvel and idw are in good terms right now as well.

How is the new idw comic? Anygood?

I bought the first tpb but haven't had a chance to read it yet. The art looks decent but not great. Looking at it makes me wish they had hired ChrisCross. The story is written by Cullen Bunn, who is a very solid Marvel writer, so I have hope it will be good.

The covers are great, though. There are alt covers for many issues by classic Marvel Micronauts artists like Pat Broderick, Butch Guice, and Kelley Jones. And JH Williams III does a good job of capturing a Michael Golden vibe on his covers.

I'm 4 issues in now, and it's kind of a slog.

If the art was better, maybe it would be easier to get through the story. But honestly, the story is not great either. A little like Joss Whedon's Firefly, except boring and the humor all falls flat. The JHW3 covers (which do not relate to the interiors in any way) for the first few issues are the only great part of the comic.

The Marvel comic destroys the IDW series.

Funny thing about Bug is he was based on the green Galactic Warrior toy, but was changed so much he was unrecognizable.

I started a conversion to adapt the SDCC Galactic Warrior toy into Bug. New head, hands, feet and his Rocket Lance for a missile.

That's awesome. Michael Golden helmet and Butch Guice helmet. I wish they'd put the Mantlo series up on comixology. I'd get the whole thing in a heartbeat.
