So... Gorilla Arm Syndrome. Also known as curling arm syndrome. Whatever you know it as, it means the same thing: any figure with an elbow joint that only allows for the palm to face up when bent.

The most recent and topical example has to be AoE Voyager Grimlock. Some bemoan his arm articulation in this regard, but honestly... Gorilla Arm Syndrome has never really bothered me.

Beast Wars Tigerhawk, RID Sky-Byte, ROTF Long Haul, DOTM Shockwave, all figures that suffer from it, but they're all some of my favorites. I suppose I just look at it as a minor posing limitation that simply means I have to pose that particular figure more creatively.

But for some, Gorilla Arm Syndrome is a real deal-breaker. So, how do you feel about it?

I always thought gorilla arms meant that the hands are below the knee level when you stand the bot upright with the arms straight down.

It depends on the rest of the figure itself and what the possibilities are in terms of what you can do with it. Some figures suffer from it and can't be helped. Others like DOTM Shockwave can use it to make more sinister poses.

If Blast Off's arm mode was engineered a little better, even Bruticus could pull off some more poses. But again, it's all a matter of what one chooses to do with it. IMO at least. Cause you either sell the figure, bitch about it online and keep it for whatever reason despite hating it(not saying the OP is bitching, but regardless of the problem I've seen some do just that), or make something of it.

I generally dislike them. I'm a stickler for articulation and one of the things that can kill potential for poses are curling arms. It's very limiting and just doesn't look good for the most part.

Doesn't bother me at all, really. Most of the time you can still get a lot of good poses out of the figure anyways.

I'm really sick of it, and it needs to stop.

It's not that hard to just have the palms facing inward instead of up.

Really really annoying and I hope one day a cure for this is found.

In all seriousness, Gorilla Arms means the character has poor articulation, as a bicep and wrist swivel allows you to fix things yourself (see Evasion Prime who looks like he would suffer from Gorilla arms but is saved by wrist and bicep swivel). Being stuck with gorilla arm means that you're missing at least one of the arm articulation points that are pretty much considered standard in new figures. And that is pretty much intolerable at the deluxe and voyager price point. When I see that in a review, I tend to skip the figure.

I hate it. And I'm pleased to report that the first wave of AOE Deluxes I picked up does not suffer from GAS.

They may have other issues, but GAS isn't one of them.

Annoying as hell, but still not a dealbreaker or anything.

I prefer the term "curling arm", just 'cause "gorilla arm" feels more like a proportion issue than an articulation issue to me. You sayin' gorillas can't rotate their wrists? :)

That said, it only really bothers me if there is something like a hand-held weapon that means the arm has to be completely straight for the weapon to be pointed forward.

    What's wrong with Optimus Primal?

A bit more accurate, methinks. Doesn't bother me anymore. I just dug my heels in and shrugged my shoulders since Hasbro will continue to do it, no matter how much we complain.

I'm not sure that's the case. A lot of the time, it comes about from the hand having to be in a specific spot in alt mode. You can't just flip that willy-nilly.

The only "universal" solution would be to add wrist swivel on all figures, which isn't necessary cost-effective.

Yeah, I bought the red Tyrant Sword )that Dr Wu dark star sabre thing) in part for my Universe Tigerhawk, and getting him in a decent pose with it wasn't the easiest thing ever. Its a dreaded syndrom hah.

Yeah, this is the only place where it really bothers me.

Its still not a big enough deal to pass on a toy though.
