You can see the feet turn into his gun-mount "wings". So my guess is, the two cockpits fold up to face AWAY from each other, one forming the real one, and the other hidden under the punk robot body. There are differences between the two cockpits, actually - you can see the right leg forms the real cockpit. I generally dislike fake chests/parts like this, but I can see why they did it - if the cockpit just split in half vertically, it would be super skinny and thin for a calf. Who won the fan vote, anyway? I never seen a news post about that... Masterpiece has become a fanwank otaku place ever since some demented toy designed got convinced LESS details BETTER and elaborate designs need to be sacrificed on the altar of anime accuracy. I stopped collecting after Tracks, and never looked back. Also, Marvel always gonna trump Sunbow for me. Better stories, more character development. I can forgive some Car Wash of Doom and boring late Budiansky stories for all the great lore and character moments Furman gave us, but heck, even Budiansky is responsible for a lot of favourites, like Blaster or Skullgrin.
