I can't be the only one around here into vinyls and blind-boxes. So I thought, maybe I could start up a thread. if you have any designer toys, be it urban vinyls or kubricks, then post many pictures. Dial-up-be-damned! This is the Hazmapo "KōwPō" a collaboration between UNKL and Kow Yokoyama. His name is Sharky. I've also gots some Dunnies. Here is my meager (but growing) collection! I've got a lot more, if this thread actually takes off.
oh man, I have almost as many Uglydoll pix as I do TF pix. Chain smoker: Sushi stealer: Happy Fall Holiday: Gimme! (this was for a friend's birthday) To the beach! I've also shot a lot of plush Uglydoll shots. Not sure if that fits with this thread, so I'll only put one.
I always read kubricks as "kubick" . Here bearbricks are the most common, those are quite new to me though. And yes they are cute. must.resist.collect.them
I don't even know what "designer toy" means but this is awesome. I wanted Votoms Kubricks but bought cheap gashapon stuff instead
I have a bunch boxed and not available for photos cause I've been procrastinating about getting a display curio just for designer toys, but I promised my wife a curio for her first. But she does love these guys. Especially the Joe Ledbetter stuff. I have to say I'm big on Ledbetter too. Sucks Tower Records closed on L.I. Its the only place I could get em without using the net or goin into the city.
Those are some awesome pictures. I got my girlfriend a whole set of the vinyls. She has most of the plushes, too. Except for the black Ice-Bat, that one's mine. Somehow most of her stuff ends up decorating my apartment, though. I wish I could take such nice pictures. I don't think I could achieve that level of clarity with my digital camera. Bearbricks are the most common, and the most popular. Kubricks are usually reserved for cute but literal figures of licensed properties. Bearbricks give the artists more freedom to make them look unique. Collecting them is fun, because you understand from the get-go that being a completist is near-impossible due to all of the promotional figurines, and the incredibly low production runs. It's liberating! A designer toy is an Urban Vinyl, or a Kubrick/Bearbrick/Qee/Trexi/Dunny/etc... usually something with a low production run, aimed at a more adult buyer. They're usually sold through specialty shops exclusively. Check out 90% of the stuff at Toytokyo.com Or ALL of the stuff at kidrobot.com and myplasticheart.com I used to work at the Tower in Carle Place. I really miss the people there, and the store itself. SIGH. I've been trying to figure out a way to display my collection for a while now. I like to keep all of my blind-box figures in a container and swap them out every so often. I just use them to "accent" the room. It's funny, that Bling Bling Qee was actually the mystery figure when it was blind-boxed in hong kong. But we got it as a carded figure.
Oooh, fun thread! I love designer toys, although most of the time the prices scare me away. I'll post some pics later of what I have. Not a lot, just some Dunnys, Uglydolls, Acid Sweeties, Scarygirl, Bossy Bear, and some other random things. Oh, I have the entire Evangelion Kubricks line, too. Spent a lot of money and time completing that one. The crown jewel of my designer collection is the infamous Mr. Bumper. That guy is hard to beat, and I got one from a local designer toy store on clearance for a mere $20!
Tower closed everywhere but online (which doesn't carry toys anymore). I used to work at 1 out of the only 2 in Illinois (but not at the Chicago store, the suburbs). I was in charge of the toys, too. Not only did my section get high praise from the corporate bigwigs, but opening all the cases didn't hurt my collection, either.
Yeah, I know it was everywhere, was just throwing my location in. The online store began curtailing their anime and designer toy sections just before they began shutting down the stores and now that stuffs gone from tower.com too. The Garden City store was the best of the 3 on the island. The most designer stuff was there. Now I call comic shops and they're like "those weird lookin bears n' stuff? nah, don't got those things" if they know what I'm talking about at all. I'd probably have an insanely larger designer collection if Tower were still around.
The one and only Bossy Bear (based on an awesome childrens book from David Horvath, creator of Uglydolls) Jeero is my favorite Ugly Vinyl, but also the only one I managed to get before they went the way of the Yeti Chillin' Oh, Mr. Bumper, why must you be so pompous?
It's the TF movie bearbrick two pack of Megatron and Prime. There's a Bee and Barricade pack coming soon too! Here's a link to pix and info on em. I forgot where I got em. Might've been eBay. Actually, pretty sure it was. Just after Wonder Fest.
I know the feeling. I used to work at that very Tower Records. It was great there, to shop and to work. Still, you can occasionally find Bearbricks at Suncoast (if you can even find one of those) or Hot Topic, when new ones come out. Hot Topic actually has the new OXOP Qee sets, but they're selling out fast. The Suncoast in Sunrise Mall has series 11 Bearbricks marked down to 2.99 a piece. Presumably to make room for a more recent series. My girlfriend got the whole set of Uglydoll vinyls (From Tower Records, of course) and was quite content. She's not as careful with them as someone who knows how hard to find they are, now. I've been eyeing that Mr. Bumper for the longest time. I just don't even know where I would put it, at the moment! I'm in the process of rearranging my stuff to make it look nicer on the walls and shelves. If I can get my hands on a tripod, or a reasonable facsimile, I'll take some nice pictures. If not, I'll take some crappy pictures.
