I think this discussion is relevant to this forum, since Wahlberg portrays the leading human character of the latest Transformers movie, Age of Extinction.

Despite how well known Mark Wahlberg is, the criminal antics of his troubled teenage years don't seem to be known at all. When he was fifteen, he threw rocks at Black children while calling them the N-Word - on two separate occasions. When he was sixteen, he attacked a middle-aged Vietnamese man with a wooden stick, knocking him unconscious - all the while yelling out racial epithets. However, these aren't the worst of his crimes; the same day he attacked the Vietnamese man, he attacked another Vietnamese man and beat him so badly that the man permanently lost sight in one of his eyes! He was sentenced to two years, but served only forty five days.

So, I raise the question: Should Wahlberg's be boycotted?

    EDIT:

I think he should be boycotted, as he has yet to contact the man whom he blinded and apologize to him directly or offer him financial assistance, which he obviously can afford.

However, having said this, my urge to see Age of Extinction is so strong, that I will still see it.

What? No. He was younger. He made extremely stupid mistakes. He's a good guy now. Family man. Seems like a great dad to his kids.

The past is in the past. He has onviously changed since he doesn't do anything wrong like that anymore. Also, why boycot him for something that happened around 20 years ago. So no, I don't think he should be boycotted.

We all make stupid mistakes when we are young. But really, does this need to really be talked about here? Let's not get crap started.

He's actually confessed to these crimes and has spoken about them numerous times on television. Let me find another YouTube video; I'll be back.

As for me, I'm still seeing Age of Extinction.

What rock has this guy been living under? How was Wahlberg not famous in February?

Seriously, people have pasts. Bad shit happens. Sometimes people reform. That's what happened here. Move on.

edit: Honestly, this should just be locked or deleted. This is a shitstorm between people that doesn't need to be brewed.

edit 2: OP is this you in the video?

He made a man permanently blind. The act was in the past, but the effect it caused on that man is permanent and is part of the present, as well as the future.

Danny Trejo also did a lot of criminal stuff in the past. But he's cool now.

So no. Don't boycott Marky Mark. Unless the guy does something recent that's really bad, I say let it be.

Depends on whether you believe in change and redemption. From the interviews I have seen, Mark Wahlberg will be the first to tell you he is not proud of who he was, or what he did, growing up where and how he did. So, if you don't believe he is different inside now, don't see his films, don't give money to his projects. If you do believe he is different, then go ahead and go see Age of Extinction.
We are all of us human, with the ability to change. That's my opinion. I know changing oneself can be hard, especially when you may have to break away from people or cycles of events which make us who we are.. But if I didn't believe things could transform, I wouldn't be here now.

This needs to be spoken about. He made a man permanently blind just because he was Vietnamese.

I swear to Christ, this is what always fucking happens when a decent movie comes out staring a person who's had a shaky past. I mean think about it:

    Robert Downey Jr.

    Russel Crowe

    Bryan Singer

I could go on. But point is, what's the past is the past, and if you are going to dwell on something such as the things that Mark Whalberg did when he wasn't even old enough to be an ADULT. Than I don't know how you could forgive yourself.

    Boycott = discrimination.

Be careful about advocating actions against people because you don't like the way they look or think; for one day it will happen to you.

This is relevant. What if someone who wants to see Age of Extinction is Vietnamese and is taken back by the fact that Mark blinded a man because he was Vietnamese?

The past is the past. He's obviously a different person now then he was when he was a teenager. We all make mistakes when we are young, some worse than others, but we shouldn't be chastised for it 20+ years later.
