No, it was a narrative tool so that Bumblebee couldn't explain the plot and they'd have to figure it out for themselves until Optimus arrived. After that it was just lazy monkey see, monkey do.

I liked him being mute in the Bumblebee movie - although I wish it was because he was new on Earth and hadn't learned the language yet.

Normal speak or completely mute. Get rid of the Cute & Funny Speech Impediment™ crap, more than anything.

Absolutely not. Bumblebee is not R2-D2. He's a super advanced robot life-form whose voice should not be irreparable because a bad guy cut a wire.

The bad guy did more than just cut a wire, he ripped out Bumblebee's entire voice box and crushed it. Still shouldn't be that hard to build a new one though, they are robots but they always make a huge deal out of it like it's supper difficult to replace. Yet the times we've seen it fixed he usually just starts talking for seemingly no reason at all. How is it both super difficult to fix and also magically able to fix itself? It's like the writer just decides when it should be broken or fixed whenever the plot calls for it.

That's another thing I wish they'd do better. If you're going to have Bumblebee be mute don't make him suddenly start talking again for no reason, actually fix it in story or keep him mute. And when he does start talking again don't have him suddenly go back to being mute again in the next movie. Keep that freaking consistent. I'm getting sick of the back and forth in the movies of he's mute, he can talk now, now he's mute again, now he's talking again, and he's mute again. Make up your damn mind!

It's ok for the films I guess but it doesn't seem to work in the series. It just makes Bumblebee seem lesser than other autobots almost like he's a pet or something.

I don't really care as long as it's done well. There are an abundance of Transformers who can speak, including other 'young', teenager-like characters. The radio gimmick does give him a bit more uniqueness. My favorite incarnation of the character was in the BB movie, and I thought they handled the radio gimmick very well. Mainly because they relied more on music than voice clips. I really didn't like it in Cyberverse though. I think it works better when they have access to actual songs and audio clips, not just generic unlicensed stuff they obviously made up for the show. That sort of made me cringe, and came across as too phony.

It worked for TF1 and Bumblebee, but please, can the guy just keep his voice?

I'm just going to say yes just because BB is the Elmo of the TF world and I wasn't a fan 35 years ago, still not one today.

I didn't mind the last movie and didn't judge it over it being him yet again in the limelight, and I understand the "kid appeal" that they are pumping like it's cream turning to butter thing, but there's better characters to move on towards...

When it first started, it was an interesting character twist not only for Bumblebee but it also showed just how cruel Megatron can be. I didn't mind it in the movies (there were other worse things to nitpik there) and it worked in Prime. But after those two series it started to get old.

I say yes, but also no. Bee needs to go back from his random voice clips and back to being a squish lad. He's a teenager or child for gods sake! We don't need him to swear like a deck hand! If voice clips are used to make him seem a bit limited or give him some minor memories (PTSD) then yes. BUMBLEBABY FOR 2020.
