Shenmue III Kickstarter Backers Allegedly Not Eligible for Certain Content Backers wont get pre-order bonuses, retail exclusives, or season pass. They'll have to buy it. None of the pledge tiers offered it so yeah...but I think it's kinda messed up seeing Backers are the one who helped made it possible.
Well they've completely killed my support of this game by one assnine decision after another. I will not support a company that has screwed over the people that are the reason the game is happening in the first place. I haven't even picked up the HD remastered collection, so at this point, I'm calling Shenmue dead in my book. How do they get preorder bonuses without preordering it then? That's basically saying, "Thanks for funding this game, but if you want he preorder bonuses, you now have to preorder another copy at a store."
I'm pretty much done with the whole THQN/Koch/DS empire at this point, gutting in hindsight that Shenmue ended up there rather then at a less shitty mid tier publisher.
Frankly, I don't even understand the point of the Kickstarter if they were just going to go and get a publisher anyway.
Because you couldn't get this sort of project bankrolled up front by a publisher 4 years ago. The market conditions for middle budget games have improved dramatically in that period and crowdfunding was one of the main catalysts for that as it proved that there was still a market for a bunch of stuff that publishers had assumed wasn't worth investing in anymore.
The problem with that in this case is that the people who helped make the game exist and proved that there is still a market for Shenmue are now getting the most screwed over.
Despite the crowdfunding confusion, I went a different route. I ended up getting this. It sold out super quick(only 5000 are made). There's another version sold in the European market, but it's missing a couple of things from the this version. A lot of backers was pissed off when this was announced. People where saying that this was nicer than the rewards that cost a lot more. Deep Silver is 100% to blame for the anger. I now have a tracking number and expect it to arrive early next week.
I played the first one on my dreamcast years ago... Did 2 also come out on x-box? I could've sworn I played it on the x-box
Yup. Shenmue 2 was released on the X-Box in 2002 in North America. Last year a HD version was released along with the first game on both the PS4 and XB1.
So after a days play.... it feels like an Og Xbox followup to shenmue 2. Some new but dated mechanics, some nice gfx updates but overall I have a nagging feeling this plays like a 19 year old game. That said I really like it so far. Stonemasons are the new Sailors.
