has anyone ever tried to spray paint a shapeways printing? I recently paid for a UW Computron and someone made a Shapeways printing of his G1 gun with a 5mm grip, but I want to paint it burgundy and I don't want to spend the money to ruin it and I don't have any extra printings I can experiment with.
I have, quite often, but only with WSF. If I may offer an alternative solution, head over to Walmart and pick up a small bottle of Apple Barrel paint. It's the super cheap stuff that you find in the craft section. Paint it on with a brush in very thin layers. Don't worry if the first, second, third, or even fourth layers don't cover everything up. Unless the handle is loose, I would tape that off and not paint it. Once you have everything painted with the Apple Barrel paint, seal it off with a coat or two of Krylon Matte Clear. I did a little angry tutorial here:
I used to make Justice League Unlimited customs, so I am very familiar with Appel Barrel paint. what does WSF Stand for
White Strong and Flexible. It's the white, slightly grainy plastic that is usually the cheapest option on Shapeways.
Sorry but I can't stand the finish. Also the I get that you can paint it, but the reason I order something in a colored plastic is so I don't have to. Especially stuff that is white to begin with. I got a few shapeway parts from Steamshield; Blades parts and the cartoon Fireflight head the a set of wings, and adding paint on them causes them to lose a lot of the finer detail, especially on the wings.
