Updated 3/30/2015: All prints tested out successfully!

Updated 9/16/2020: Yes after 5 and half years, I decided to take a stab at CW Fireflight as a Phantom! I think I got the gist right here, too! (see my last poste on the next page)

Updated 9/28/2020: CW/G1 Fireflight (aka Thunderbird 7) is ready! All pictures updated.

    1. G1 Fireflight as a F-4 Phantom - just love the Phantom so much and this was one of the only two Aerialbot I had back in '86.

I used a Revell 1:100 Phantom II snap-tight model kit and took the nosecone, wings, body panels, and tail fins. Drop-tanks and sidewinders are nice accessories.

Other modifications including moving the shoulder of the figure backward (upward) to enough space for the low-mounted wings, and in order to accommodate the much longer tail I have to use two pieces of magnets, one of them hidden inconspicuously inside the elbow.

    2. Slingshot sholder upgrade - and even if you get the Takara/TRU Sling, consider upgrading its shoulders with this set that has Harrier jump-jet like nozzles. The rear nozzles will need to be glued to the hands - just cut off the permanently pointing middle fingers :)

(Note: Dwayne Johnson would probably call)

In looking at my Fireflight figure, the joints for the wings are actually fully fledged pin joints, rather than the bump joints the elbows have and what that model appears to have. but even if that's a hole and not a bump I see in your model, there is no easy way to remove the wing pin from the actual toy. Since it isn't a through hole there's no way to push the pin out.

The upgrades look great! I'm just not so sure how feasible the wings are.

Thanks - yes that was my biggest gripe. There is a solution but a bit intense - I just have to cut along the bottom of the wing until the pin is fully exposed, pry the old wings out and remove the ping with pliers. It is irreversible :(

Love the idea, especially for the Harrier nozzles.

But I do wonder about the wingtips for Fireflight---they are not very Phantom-esque IMHO. The position lights are grossly exagerrated/caricatured, making them look much more like the outrigger gear housings of a Harrier---which defeats the entire point of "new wings that don't look like a Harrier's".

From a distance, a Phantom's wingtip is quite crisp, with few protruding details:

You are right about the phantom wing tips. I modeled it after usaf thunderbirds model kit, which in turn already exagerrated these parts ?

I'll try to tone them down a bit in the final model...thanks!
