I don't like her politics, so I'm not gonna watch a show based on her book. (For those that don't get the joke......) One is written by this person who said the above quote. This is also the woman who is famous for her bad relaunch of the Captain Marvel books.
I didn't know she wrote any other books, but I vaguely remember her saying something like that during her time on Captain Marvel.
I forgot who she was at first. I was thinking she was the one who gave us the [Unsolicited opinions] meme.
This is another case of failing up just a few months back she was lamenting the state of the comic industry. Not understanding that some of the things she and her friends did were part of the cause of it. Kelly Sue DeConnick Laments The Abysmal State Of Comics After Telling People Not To Buy Her Books Now they are green lighting a series by her and showing that Amazon has learned nothing about why rings of power didn't go over well with audiences and allowing another hack writer to learn nothing from their mistakes and to fail upwards and get rewarded for causing many of the current issues in the comics industry. (People listened to her and didn't buy her books btw)
I haven't read sex criminals but it's title alone is provocative enough for people to give it a try so it has every chance of being a success should it be strong enough to capitalise on the initial interest that the title would likely bring. I read the first two volumes of batch planet and I think that if it were well adapted into a television show it could do well as orange is the new black and a handmaid's tale both quickly found their audiences so this could attract the same people who made those shows successes. A likely misogynistic backlash would also likely draw a lot of extra attention to the shows and this would likely make many want to see what all of the fuss is about
If it's Amazon the person who greenlit this is the same person who canceled a direct adaptation of the book series of Conan the Barbarian because it was "too toxic". Thankfully netflix picked it up.
I enjoyed Sex Criminals a lot, and I hope the show captures the charm of the comic book (which shouldn't be too hard, really.) I look forward to hearing The Wide Weiner Man song and seeing Suzie dance around to a Fat Bottomed Girls sound-alike (because I assume, after the writer couldn't get clearance to use the actual song lyrics in the comic, the show will cheekily avoid using the actual song.) I'm not happy about it being made for Amazon Prime, who canned Paper Girls after only one season, but - as people are so fond of saying when they have nothing meaningful to contribute - it is what it is. ~L~
Both these comics were solid, Sex Criminals has been in production as a TV show in one way or another for like... the better part of a decade now, and I can't say I'm surprised Bitch Planet got picked up as well (maybe its been in a similar sort of dev hell, I don't recall hearing anything about it). I'm a little skeptical either will end up as a good TV show, due to the stylistic and editorial limitations of the medium, but sure, let's see where this goes.
I’ve only read Sex Criminals and it was alright. Amazon is hit-and-miss with their choices. I don’t necessarily trust them but The Boys keeps better every season so… we’ll see!
