Just found this out Seth Rogen and Batman writer Mattson Tomlin are working on a horror movie based on a graphic novel called memetic. I pasted the rest down below.

Seth Rogen's New Horror Movie Might Change How You Feel About Memes
What if memes became murderous? Seth Rogen’s new horror film Memetic chronicles a meme’s contribution to the apocalyptic fall of society. Per the Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate is in final negotiations to pick up the Rogen-produced post-apocalyptic thriller based on the James Tynion IV comic of the same name. Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote the screenplay for Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman with Robert Pattinson, will pen the script.

With illustrations by Eryk Donovan, the Memetic comic follows the impact of the Good Time Sloth, a viral meme that soon becomes weaponized when those who come in contact with it become “Screamers” who succumb to “murderous rage,” as per THR. Not all are impacted by the dangerous Good Time Sloth, however; the comic centers on a colorblind man who tries to find his boyfriend amid the chaos of the post-apocalyptic world.

While the comic/movie sounds a little loopy on the front of it, I'd like to point out that "killer memes" is kinda-sorta the MO of Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex.

In fact, an alternate definition of the titular "Standalone Complex" wherein spontaneous isolated copycat incidents give rise to the appearance of a coordinated action, would in fact simply describe a "meme". The show came out before public consciousness of meme culture became a thing.

    See also Ringu/The Ring.

Not going to lie, I'm interested in Mattson Tomlin's involvement. He and Krysty Wilson-Cairns (co-screenwriter on 1917 and Last Night in Soho) have been interesting me over the past couple of months with the projects they're getting involved with. I will be following the production of Memetic for sure.

Sums up my reaction perfectly. Never thought I'd see anything top the emoji movie for sheer stupidity.

Was there ever a director who liked losing money more then this person?

    Well I suppose that's a dubious honor.

Why are we even talking about a director? Nobody's been tapped for that role yet, at least not as per that article.

I'm fifty/fifty on him I liked Sauage Party and Disaster Artist but don't like This Is The End or The Interview. In terms of his shows, The Boys is great but I think that is less him and more of his cowriter.
I never considered those movies to be killer memes but thinking about the concept it does match up well with memes

Honestly, it's about time someone made a movie about a non-Ring memetic cognitohazard.

Well it’s original I’ll give him that. It does sound like a terrible idea though, and it does kinda feel like Hollywood still doesn’t understand memes or that memes quickly become outdated.

INDIVIDUAL memes become outdated and making a film about a real meme would be bad. However, what all of you seem to be missing is that this isn't about a real meme, but a made up meme as a stand in for the concept of memes as a whole. Memes, as a concept will exist as long there is widespread communication, and have existed for centuries at least. Look up "knights fighting snails" if you don't believe me.

Furthermore, this isn't some LOL, WHAT IF MEMES WERE EVIL XD story like everyone is assuming. The original comic is a cosmic horror story, but with the vector for the usual eldritch madness being something likely to reach more people than a creepy book: A meme.

It's ironic, but also kind of sad, that so many people in this thread are saying the entire concept is idiotic when they themselves are mindlessly bandwagonning without taking two minutes to read a simple Wikipedia synopsis of the comic that would dispel the idea that the entire concept can't work.

That said, Seth Rogan will definitely screw it up.

I always thought the concept for this movie could work. I think any concept despite how silly it might sound could work, It all depends on who is in charge. I agree I think Seth might mess it up but he does have another writer helping him so it might not be too bad

I also heard of the knights fighting snails. But I did forget about that.

I think one of the oldest "memes" that a good number of us will be familiar with, if you were in school in the 90s, was the "Stussy S". That was a thing even before the internet became widespread.

That is a very good example of a pre-internet meme!

Again, actually read what the original comic is about before deciding you hate it or decrying the people creating it as "normies" (which is an eyeroll-inducingly stupid term all on its own) all based on a basic and arguably misleading description like the thread title.

    Oh, and:
God I hate people who think they're special for not being "normies" (*gag*).
