    And to think, all the Decepticons had to do was push down on the BIG FRICKING BUTTON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HULL in order to open the crash vault. I mean, it wasn't even hidden... no secret code or key. Just PUSH it. Stupid cons!

    Well, in the novelization and therefore presumably the script upon which it was based, Optimus had to activate a keypad and tap in a Cybertronian code before he could open the crash vault.

    One is simply left to assume it happened off-camera in the final film.
