Did anyone else here saw these 2 modern (for the 80s) takes on Charles Dickens's stories in theaters as a kid? I did when i was in second grade at age 7, i saw Scrooged about 3 times in theaters as my family loved it as it became one of my favorites and saw O&C 5 times in theaters, loved it too. I had some of the merchandise from 2 t-shirts, CD soundtrack (my first CD and still owns it), PJs, 3 PVC toys from Sears, readalong with cassette, junior novel, stuffed Oliver, Mcdonalds toys from Happy Meals, Mcdonalds singing ornaments, coloring books, sticker books, computer game and a jar with Oliver & Dodger, a shame it never hit video the next year as i wanted it but it never showed up for the next 6 years but glad it did when i was 15 as i saw the re-issue and got the movie for Christmas when it finally hit video as it's one of my favorite Disney animated movies as i watch it every holiday as an odd tradition. Scrooged was a nice New York modern take on Christmas Carol as it had a nice cast and solid laughs with dark comedy thrown in, i found it to be quite underrated and gotta love Bill Murray.
I haven't seen Oliver and Company, but Scrooged is a holiday mainstay in my household. I watch it almost every year. It's one of Bill Murray's best, along with having a great supporting cast. I think his transition is a little more abrupt then most Christmas Carols, but at least that keeps the comedy going through most of it.
I hadn't seen Scrooged until it was on HBO, sometime in the early '90s, but I really liked it. I'll usually watch it, whenever I see that it's on. I've never seen Oliver and Company, but I remember the commercials when it was promoted in the '80s. For some reason, I kind of remember the Happy Meal toy commercials for that movie.
I dont recall seeing it in the theaters, but I definitely watch it almost every year, along with several other Christmas Carol movies. Bill Murray at his finest.
oh I get it at first I thought you were saying Oliver and COmpany was a take on a Christmas carol and I was like no it isn't, but Oliver and Company is a take on Dickens Oliver Twist.
What i was saying MTME is that both modern for the 80s takes on Charlies Dickens's stories on the big screen and both set in New York as they came out the same year and month
That line always cracks me up and who else thought the cast in Scrooged was terrific like Carol Kane, John Glover (aka Riddler on Batman TAS), Karen Allen, Brian Doyle Murray, Alfre Woodard (The Warriors) and Roy Brocksmith (Tales from The Crypt, Archnophobia, Tango and Cash and Total Recall) were terrific? And who else had the same Oliver and Company merchandise like i did including the soundtrack and Mcdonalds stuff?
Did the eyeball in the glass scene scared anyone when they first saw it? And did Sykes reminded anyone else of Clarence from Robocop? he looks like him too. I remembered when i saw O&C on my first viewing with my pop i whispered to him "Dad, he looks like Clarence from Robocop" and he told me "he does" then when i was 14 when i saw the re-issue I whispered "Holy shit, he does look like Clarence" lol.
Scrooged is a classic. I've seen it a million times we used to watch it allo the time even when it wasn't Christmas. A far better telling of the story than that CGI Christmas Carol. Though it's a bit of a contest between Scrooged and Blackadder's Christmas Carol where they reversed the story. With him starting generous and good and ending mean and greedy.
