So my college buddy brings by one of his childhood friends to check out my collection. While we are BSing he mentions he had a few and still has them. He looks around till he finds Ultra Magnus, and says "Thats him, but mine was a little different". I ask him how and he says Optimus was blue. I figured naaahhh he must be mistaken, so I tell him to send me picks when he gets home. So a week goes by and he calls me, tells me this story how he got them in the early 80's and his aunt who was a flight attendant brought them back from japan, then he texts me these pics.

I never even saw this before, I had no idea there were 2 diaclone Magnus's. He says it came with a red race car so it must have came from the Diaclone multi pack, but the car (red mirage) is gone. Boooo. But it looked wrecked and was missing parts so I gave him $80 for it. Some restoration work, chrome and plastic polishing later and it came out awesome. Only part I am still missing is the gun and the actual diaclone belt. I should get them in the mail a week from now. Not a bad find. Chrome looks mint now, almost no chips on the blue prime and he's still kinda stickered. I finally scored an awesome drop in your lap find.

    Lucky you!

I think the Diaclone came with a mostly solid red transforming car as an accessory. (Sorta like Metroplex's and Trypticon's little buddies Scamper & Full-Tilt, though more the size of a diaclone car) So not necessarily from a multi-pack with a red Mirage.

The red dude front & center:

    Or here:

I guess he's in the box inside the trailer in the packaging:

And here's the little car mode:

I am totally stoked with how it came out. I have restored some nearly destroyed toys, but this thing was hurting. The thing sat in a garage for many years, it was covered with a layer of drywall dust and some yellow epoxy stuff. I put paper towels with soaked with goo gone on the spots and let them sit for a few days, it mushed right off. I disassembled him and soaked the chrome pieces (which looked very faded and pitted) in a mix of water and simple green, and it cleaned it nice. It had just minor pitting and some low abrasive polish made it smooth and glass shiney, and luckily didn't burn through the chrome which it sometimes does. The minor scratches on the color plastic I hit with 1200 grit sandpaper and polished it and now almost all of it looks flawless. Overall it came out better than my $10 predaking, which was my best restoration work ever. I would say its C9 other than the clip on the right arm of the trailer is broken off.

I'd be more inclined to hound him for that red diaclone dude than Mirage. Red Mirage KOs are easily available, but that diaclone buggy dude I think is pretty rare. Never used again after that.

Daaaaaaaaaaaamn that's a nice score! And good work on the restoration.

I love restoring old TFs. There's something really rewarding about bringing a TF back from a bad state.

Yeah, personally though the little buggy guy doesn't excite me, but a vintage red mirage got me jumpin. Oh well, if he finds it, he finds it.

I thought this um came with the powered convoy giftset, also with the red mirage and the black/blue sideswipe. may be wrong though.

Bad ass stuff, i've always wanted that Magnus but could never find one. Not sure how you feel about KO's but I think kotoys has a fake red Mirage if you decided to end up buying one.

Thanks all. I had to make a post about it because this stuff never happens to me. I have been to hundreds of garage sales and flea markets and I strike out every time, or miss something by minutes. Hell I always JUST miss things in the for sale section here. This didn't even look like a score when I first pulled it out of the box, it took some tlc but man was I stoked. To think I paid 4x the price for a reissue.
