What's the scariest video game moment for you? Mine? Dead Space 2 when you are re-entering the docked Ishimura from 1. I remember it was actually hard to push forward for me at that point. You just knew there was about to be some shit. The fact that it was in a decommissioned state after the events of 1 and had no power made it a harrowing experience. Plus for the first 10 min or so all you heard was the occasional noise from the necromorphs. Where the hell are they? You knew they were there somewhere. Every corner you turned was a difficult move to make. Expertly done!
My favorite series is Resident Evil. I don't get scared of the games where I am going to cry and sleep with the light on, but, the games keep me on edge, especially 7, because first person view all up in my face is intense.
The trenchcoat Tyrant in resident evil 2 scared me pretty good the first time I played through the 2nd scenario. Alien Isolation also scared me real good too. I was often hiding in a locker with eyes glued to the motion tracker. Scariest green dot ever.
Resident Evil had a lot to mention a specific moment, but let's just say the first zombie in the first game gave me a nightmare. But as much as I love Resident Evil, I found Silent Hill a scarier game. Supernatural in general is scarier than sci-fi monsters, but Silent Hill creeped me out from the fog to the siren. That game was a real nightmare fuel.
decades ago on RE1, when the dogs come through the window. First and last time I've ever jumped at a game. After that happened, I was like "oh, THIS is going to start happening in games now, great".
June 1997. I was at Blockbuster Video looking for a game to rent, I've read in Gamepro magazine of how the DOOM series are a must play so I got DOOM 64, at that time I was scared of the demons, the idea of walking in hell and pentagrams everywhere. I used cheat codes like invincibility, all weapons and unlimited ammo. The problem was I had to punch in the codes Everytime I start a new level. I forgot to do so when I was walking around, I reached a dead end but got massive damage from behind, I turned around and I see the Cyberdemon roaring at me with the volume on high, fired a rocket at me and doomguy's death scream was too much for me, I shut off the N64, took the game back to BBV and didn't play anything for 3 days. When the movie DOOM was released, I found it cool and made me want to try the game again. I no longer fear it. In fact, I like the series so much that I have almost all the games available on multiple consoles. I'm also a believer of the paranormal and I love playing horror games. 7 years ago, when my youngest sister was 16 years old, we took turns playing Fatal Frame and when battled the ghosts, she gets a little nervous and hands the controller to me. She mostly just solved puzzles. I played FF2 and FF3 by myself and recently, I played the first game (because it is now October) and she came over this past Saturday and she said it was fun but at the time spooky. She wants to play the other 2 but not in front of her kids, they are too young to watch. In the mid-90s, I was watching the music video Thriller by Michael Jackson and the part where the zombies were dancing, I've seen a lot of times, something in my head happened and I grew deathly afraid of zombies almost immediately. It lasted until early 1999, when I had to face my fears, I rented Resident Evil. I was nervous and played through with my radio playing rock music and there were lots of moments that made me jump. Oh look! A bazooka! And a dead body. Let me get th-Forrest gets up! Walking around the corner and I find nothing. Attempted to go back and a zombie walks towards me. Found a note, read it, some zombies busts through a closet. Everyone knows this one, Walking down a hall. Zombie dogs bust through the windows. To me, the scariest game series has to be the Silent Hill series. The enemies are based on what the main character fears. That is enough to traumatize anyone.
I'm really old. I'd have to say it was playing Jurassic Park on the Sega CD with my headphones on. You could hear when the Tyrannosaurus was coming for you, but you didn't know from where. There would be this huge booming that got louder and louder, faster and faster. You would be spinning all around trying to locate him unti, too late! He popped out of the trees, or over a wall and that was it. The screen went blood red.
Aliens vs Predator 99's Marine campaign is the most unnerving experience i've had in gaming, searching through the levels with the motion scanner beeping and not knowing where the Aliens were going to come from. AVP2 and 2010 didn't even come close to the level of tension in that game, although the former was still really good despite that. Resident Evil is pretty mild in general. Only times where it really got me was in RE1DC where they moved the window dogs to the staircase room and that bit in one of RE2's B scenarios where Mr X jumps over the bannisters on the 2nd or 3rd floor of the RCPD lobby. i'll give RE3 a nod as well for the constant application of tension with Nemesis and the randomised supplies. Not scary in the horror sense, but I almost jumped out of my chair in X-Wing Alliance when I got briefed for a docking mission and dropped out of hyperspace next to the Executor.
Resident Evil 2. The interrogation room, where the Licker crashes through the 2 way mirror. Got me every time, even though I was expecting it.
outlast definitely holds my top scare moment, but between the mannequin level and when you find a body in a locker. the sequel also had a good scare when my brother was achievement hunting Spoiler Guide: Turn left into the corrider and.... OH SH** RUN!!! Brother: *begins walking in* What? is that supposed to be fun- *Giant bear breaks through house* AH SH**!!!!
Glad to see a number of others mentioned RE2 Mr. X In my case, it was after you fight him in the torch puzzle room, where you get the gear. After he fell, I relaxed, because I figured I was safe for a while. I went down the quiet hallway behind the room, and BOOM!!!! He comes crashing back through the wall and I have to fight him AGAIN. I swear I jumped a few feet out of my chair. Even now, listening to that Mr. X music on the soundtrack makes my skin crawl.
Another vote for the dogs. And I'll add the first time you see the monsters in Uncharted 2. Having something move in the foreground (particularly when you think it's part of the landscape) is disturbing as heck.
Almost the same for me, except it wasn't the RE1 dogs. It was that part in RE2 where you're in the RCPD going down a hall of boarded up windows. It's quiet like that dog part, and when you pass a certain window a bunch of zombie arms suddenly burst through the gaps. That shit made me damn near jump out of my chair. And I had the same "Oh great.." reaction to it.
Also, Nightmare's first appearance in Metroid Fusion. The ice area its in has tranquil music playing, then suddenly a huge shadow flies by with a terrifying groan, and I drop dead from sheer fright. And then it happens again!
Ohly sh!t, yes!!! That got me the first time. Reminds me of that old skit from the Muppet Show of a news report where furnitures everywhere were coming to life and eating people.
STALKER: The first encounter with a controller. First time I played I got killed by it and noped the fuck out for a day. FEAR: The ladder scene. Simple but well executed and made me jump back really good. Amnesia: The whole game is probably the scariest I've ever played, and most of that game could qualify for this list. But I'll choose the water monster because it's loud and a bit unique in the game. PT: Just a demo. but pretty scary. Real shame we never got a full game out of this. Lots of jump scares with the ghost got me pretty good.
you know, this is more of a personal and age thing, but i never mentioned something that scarred me for life...... the bottom of the well in TLoZ: OoT. i was friggin 7 when i reached that area, and even though i watch the old horror movies back then... but this was different to me... the torture chamber, the fall-through floors, the creepy arm zombie grandma..... ugh... i still freeze up whenever i hear the music from that level. for example, about a year ago i was busy playing smash bros Wii U while my brother was watching a youtuber named Criken and the moment he used that them in his video, i had to pause the game because i couldn't....
Doom 2016 - The first encounter with a Hell Knight. You're running along and all of a sudden, this monster appears out of nowhere and pounds you.
