Sam Mendes to Direct Preacher! - Superhero Hype! I realize this property has a rather long history of not quite getting there when it comes to film adaptations. Kevin Smtih was going to direct, then it was going to be an HBO series (which WOULD have been the perfect format! Every season could have been a trade paperback), and now, at least, a kick ass director is attached. Who would Preacher fans like to see cast as the big three? Personally, I can see the actor who portrays Bill Compton in "True Blood" darken his hair and basically become Jesse Custer. Colin Farrell, if you've seen "In Bruges" practically is Cassidy. Tulips a tough one. As long as they don't automatically go for Cameron Diaz, I'll be pleased.
Sam Mendes is a GREAT director. Preacher is a GREAT series. I know that comic book fans like to complain. Hell, I enjoy complaining too sometimes. But when you put Sam Mendes on anything, I expect the best, and my expectations are never disappointed. Sam Mendes is like a Chris Nolan. Even if he changes the story of the book (Nolan does, and Mendes did with "Road to Perdition"), you know he's making the right judgment in the end. I hope that Mendes ignores the complaints from, uh, well, if anyone's read the series, you know that A LOT OF PEOPLE will be protesting the storyline. The offensive story is part of the joke and badass-ness of Preacher, and I hope it doesn't change too much. Then again, a lot of people complained about religion in "The Golden Compass," so you never know... I would've been happy with Mark Steven Johnston doing it a few years ago, but then I saw Ghost Rider. Probably for the best that he's gone. I wonder if they're still interested in getting Cyclops to play the lead role?
I'm a big fan of Preacher. This should be interesting. Don't know about Jesse or Cassidy, but Charlize Theron would be great as Tulip. I know he's a tad old, but Clint Eastwood as the Saint of Killers would be perfect, if you ask me.
I agree about Clint. And with a director as good as Mendes, who knows? Maybe Mendes will get Clint (or someone equally respectable). But probably not Clint himself. He's selective as hell now. I think I read somewhere that the Saint's image was based on Lee Marvin, but his dialogue and personality is based on Clint Eastwood. When I read the book, I didn't know that. I "heard" Lance Henrikson's voice for the Saint. Lance's performances in "The Quick and the Dead" and "Appaloosa" are very Saint-y, too. I think he'd be great. Not too old for the part, either, as the Saint looks pretty darn old at times. And again, I'm not sure who I'd want as our 3 main characters. Virtually all of the unmade versions of Preacher have had James Marsden (Cyclops) lined up to play Jesse, and I don't see why not. He'd be good in the role!
Oh wow. I never considered Lance until you opened my eyes to the possibility. Now I'm seriously contemplating him for the Saint, too. That gravelly voice... the tender AND menacing qualities it can have. Great choice.
What do you guys think of Gary Oldman as Herr Starr? Note: I am completely making crap up. I have no idea who might be in any possible Preacher movie. I was just thinking of people I'd like to see in the role, and I think Gary would be awesome as the arch-villain of the series.
I read Preacher and had 2 thoughts: I will go to hell with my mom telling me that book was the reason and I gotta see this on the silver screen! there are comics that "seem" perfect for film but don't translate. this one with Mendes might float....
