I'm in California, so different states might have already been paying.

I just paid for an auction I won- and was hit with sales tax! I know it's ben a while since I got anything off ebay... but when did this happen?

Way back in the day (I want to say 2004-2006) I got hit for sales tax. It was an in-state purchase, though, which is probably why.

In state purchases should charge sales tax. I also believe all internet sales are SUPPOSED to charge sales tax, but it's ambiguous.

Huh... yeah the seller was from Cali, so that might be it.
Funny- I guess I don't often get stuff from fellow Californians.

When selling on eBay, you have the option in applying sales tax to your sales for transactions within your state. This is highly suggested for sellers that sells over $20k a year.

LOL There's been talk of Amazon also implementing a Sales Tax since the company is based in Seattle. Washington St. has a Sales Tax, and it differs city to city, but Seattle specifically has a near 10% Sales Tax.

Technically, in many states if you buy anything online (regardless of what state you're buying from) from a site/seller that doesn't charge sales tax, you're supposed to figure out how much sales tax you should have paid and pay it when you file your income tax returns. But (essentially) nobody does that and the government doesn't really enforce it on individual consumers and/or smaller sellers. But a seller with higher volume, or one operating as a business, the government is going to notice if they don't collect it.

How is a seller charging sales tax a way to "make money to maintain the site"? That money goes to the government, not eBay or the seller.

Many/most states have laws where, if an online retailer has some physical presence in a state, they need to charge sales tax to buyers from that state. Amazon is currently in the process of opening more distribution centers to reduce their shipping times, which means establishing physical presence in more states and charging more people sales tax. For instance, Amazon just started charging sales tax in Pennsylvania on September 1st.

Sales tax doesn't fund the site.

Gonna happen in Cali as well. The politicians have been salivating over it.

Actually it already happened with Amazon...as of about 2 weeks ago IIRC.

I hate to say it, but I think it's a good thing. I used to get customers every day who would say "nah, I'll just get it on Amazon...no sales tax that way". Amazon and eBay have definately hurt local stores and done some serious damage to local economies....and don't get me started on iTunes (MAN, I miss music stores....) and Netflix...

Canada and the US are, obviously, different countries with different laws. For one thing, Canada has a nationwide federal sales tax (GST), while the only sales taxes here in the US are at the state level.

Here in Cali they were also throwing around a Value Added Tax- on top of the income and sales tax.
