If I recall, Doberman's seem to have it more often than other breeds of dogs. I believe some studies have found that the animals are actually awake, they just have zero control over their body for the period that they're "asleep."

Which is a condition refered to as sleep paralysis. When the mind is awake and the body is asleep. However you do not need to have narcolepcy to experience sleep paralysis, as it can occur to anyone, it just tends to happen far more often and frequently in nacrolyptics. Also that falling alseep all of the sudden is just one form the disease can take, just as often the problem is inability to have restful sleep. Basically you cannot enter REM sleep at the proper time so it is much like going through life on nothing but naps. This continual disruption of the sleep cycle can also have other dramatic impacts on someone with the disease, such as developing manic depression. My father and sister both suffer from the disease, as well as manic depression as a result. My father cycles through his manic and depressed states over the course of a week, my sister cycles through it over the course of the day.
I hate zombie threads. Hell, the thread even had a zombie looking individual post in it to doom it from the start.
