As most of you know, ROTF Voyager is a pretty disappointing release. The colors are all wrong, funky deco, and more looser joints due to Ironhide had prior multiple releases of the same mold. But while most of you may skip this release, I find the new cannons and the new head sculpt serve a very good purpose... upgrading your 07 Movie Ironhide. Both the new head sculpt and cannons are a lot more screen accurate than the previous. The head sculpt is spot on on Ironhide's likeness with some nice crooked facial feature. Add a lot more accuracy and personality over the old head. The cannons, while being sized a bit funky with the right one really big and the left one a bit small, and a bit oddly colored with the light grey (thanks again Hasbro!), they look cool on the figure still. The light grey cylinder/barrel of the left one might slide around too much, so you might need to unscrew it and do some minor mod to keep it in place. I even flipped it right side up to make it look more accurate. Not sure why Hasbro assembly it the other way around... The parts are pretty much identical, so swapping arm parts, hands, and cannons are easy. The only tricky part is unscrewing the head, which the screw is located at the bottom end of the neck, and has to half-transform the figure to expose the screw through a gap on the body panels. So get a long enough skinny screw driver and some patience to get the head out. But once thats done, pick and choose any parts of the ROTF Ironhide and swap it with your original. When everything is in place, and maybe add a little bit of paint touch up, Ironhide can look better than ever, thanks to the ROTF Ironhide.
I was waiting on someone doing this as I wanted to see what it looked like. It looks awesome. Think I'll pick up ROTF Ironhide and do the same. Thanks alot for the pic, most appreciated.
The weapons look accurate this time, but too bad Hasbro had to repaint him... Why oh why??? Did he appear that way for a short time in the new movie??? I doubt he did. But looking at the photos here, I might just want to get him too and repaint him black...hmmm... But will remain in robot mode coz his truck mode has his weapon sticking up at the back.... WTF!!! By the way, the Voyager ROTF Ratchet looks good with the dirt style paint, saw it the other day.. But, its missing some details such as the emergency lights on the roll bar isn't painted unlike the first movie Voyager Ratchet, so that repaint too was a disappointment. Probably the only 2 voyager figures not worth getting if you already have the first movie versions..
yea when mine comes from bbts, that i ordered in the case, i was considering giving the guns to the older *black* version i have lol... in fact maybe even combine both guns for the new one, and the original, and give him TWO large canons...
Smurfist... Also I dunno about pickin up this release, my Movie 1 Ironhide looks fine as well as most of my movie 1 bots do.
but... but the blue one has that lame allspark blue does it not? ! i hate that stuff... except on that ironhide's headlights, for the prem, that actually looks pretty cool. HOW ever, is that clear headlights i see on the new ironhide? *gray* i like that.
True enough although used in the right place... *thinks of Landmine* and the allspark blue looks rather decent. Just checked my original Ironhide and he has clear plastic headlights they're just covered in paint... may have to fix that.
holy cow? are you kidding me? they are painted? they had wonderful CLEAR headlights and they painted them? oh well, lol but i suppose he's not BAD in that gray color, he might look better in person i do not know, i'll have to way to see, but he looks MUCH better then the blue version. lol they SHOULD of released it in red instead of blue. speaking of which, why is it that all the other versions of ironhide in this line is red, but this one is gray? any one know why?
I bought him. Funny thing is, with all this talk of mold degradation, the ROTF actually has tighter joints than my movie 1 Ironhide; tight to the point that it's actually kind of a pain to transform him. The gray isn't movie accurate, but damn it looks sharp on him; I'd almost prefer it to the black if it wasn't for the whole accuracy thing. The new head and guns are great, but I had to open up and switch around the one on his left arm; the part that slides out was backwards.
QFT. I got rid of my movie 1 IH a while back (now kicking myself), so i picked this guy up at the TRU sale. The head and guns are FAR superior to the first version. And I can't get over how good the gray looks in bot mode. Truck mode, ehhhh, not so much. but I do like the Nest symbol on the side. Don't know if that's in the movie either tho.
I am guessing your original Ironhide was a bit loose, due to play-time, versus the grey Ironhide being brand new? But this observation is solely based on my sample, since the upper arm swivels (both sides), elbow (both sides), wrist ball jont (both sides), hip swivels especially (both sides) and the chest flip up hinges are all looser on the ROTF grey version. Even tested them on with the black Ironhide parts while I do the assembly and swapping. Its almost to a point its a trade off that if I want to use certain gray parts and swap that on my black Ironhide, I either have to fix the looseness or live with the inferior tightness compare to the original parts. So its not a random loose joint here and there, but they are all consistantly looser, coming in pairs.
I gotta say... this guy impressed me WAY more in person than I expected. I'm already a fan of the Movie Ironhide mold, so I caved and got him. While the grey isn't terribly impressive in vehicle mode, it's very much more 'official', and the kind of paint job you'd expect on a utility vehicle employed by a government agency. But in robot mode, for some reason the paint job just WORKS. The contrast brings out a lot of detail that kinda gets lost in the inky blackness of the original Ironhide (I don't have the Premium). The headlights look MUCH better unpainted, and overall the pain job is VERY clean and neat, and just feels very quality. The guns are terrific, and the head mold is very much spot on movie Ironhide. I really like this guy more than I expected to.
Dang, I'm still undecided if I should get him as I rather buy newer toys and the fact that the engineering and toy design isn't that different compared to the first movie.
I was unsure about picking him up, and left him till last. However, really glad I have him now. He really does look fantastic in bot mode, and weapons are so much better, despite having had to reverse the laft-arm weapon, which has made it loose.
I may have to pick up Greyhide, if only because the stupid slide-on bit that holds the windshield to his back on my Movie Ironhide has long since snapped, and I don't know if I can glue/cement it back together. Question: do the new cannons mount on the original Movie figure's flatbed? -XCN-
