Going back and reading the 1st page (versus the 1st post) it looks like the fact is somewhere in between. The OP DID indeed buy SS and breakaway thinking to return/exchange them. However, he started wondering if he should do it and therefore opened this thread seeking opinioin on why more people didn't do it.
Yes I did buy Sideswipe at full price. Then bought another one, later, at the TRU sale and returned that to Target. I bought a Voyager Starscream so that later when I find a Voyager Stratosphere, I will return the Starscream in its place. that is the only toy I have "stockpiled". Anyway resume discussion.
