Since there's been some general ongoing speculation about these guys, I wanted to provide some additional confirmation that these are in fact US variants within the line, and some photo evidence for documentation. Also, for those that care about such things, the production information on the ones I have as well. All four purchased at a TRU in Orlando, FL.

good comparisons. I have not seen any of the darker variants in the like 12 times I have gone digging through deluxes at different stores. I really want the dark breakaway. The light one needs a wing man

If it helps...I think the same case that carries these variants/running changes also comes with a Skids with painted teeth.

I just found these at a TRU in Harrisburg, PA...one dark Sideways, one dark Breakaway, and one painted teeth Skids.

It could be coincidence...but they were pulled out of the same box because the TRU I got them from was restocking the shelves after the devastation caused by the release date.

Wow. I had no idea that I had a Dark Sideways.   It's really hard to tell when I'm at the store looking at all the other Sideways' if it is Dark or Light.

I have yet to see a light sideways here. nothing but the dark ones.

 

Hmm. Well if I see a light one, I'll be sure to pick it up. Same with the dark Breakaway. That one looks so much better than the light one.

You can barely see his teeth through the packaging. Just gotta keep fiddling with the package.

 

that's really cool, didn't realize I had a Dark Sideways, explains why I didn't find the red as glaring as it is in the pics and reviews I've seen.

Now I'm curious which Skids I bought, I'm actually gonna be slightly annoyed if his teeth aren't painted, since his ridiculous gold tooth was pretty much the only reason I bought it.

Snagged both of the dark variants today at HEB grocery store in Waco, TX. They are MUCH better than the lighter versions. Though, I still like the light Sideways too. I wonder if they'll not be putting out any more of the light versions.

If I'm looking at them right and the Dark One is grayish gunmetal and the silver one is a slighty darker shade than Sideswipe then I've seen both in the UK the dark one in Tesco and the light one in Toymasters.

The one I currently have is the exact same shade as Legends Brawn's front bumper (is that the dark one then ?).

The toymaster also had Detour and Tesco had Dead end variation of the small car.

Toymaster didn't have any Breakaways so I was unable to check them. (I may ring them up and ask them).

Just a thought to those who want to have one of each in a practical way - don't forget Hasbro displayed a twin pack with Sideways in it so bare that in mind if you care too.

 

Thanks for this, I did not know there was a variant of Sideways. I think I have the darker one - but I don't know if one is more rare that the other. I will look for the dark breakaway when I'm out tomorrow and report my findings.

 

Only place I've seen the dark ones is TRU. Which version is the variant, or perhaps the rarer one?

I'm leaning a little towards darker Sideways right now. Probably skipping Breakaway altogether.

Did some quick searching just to see which Sideways is more accurate. I think it's definitely the lighter one.

 

I haven't seen anything but dark Sideways around here. I think the light Sideways will be more rare.

I wonder if they changed it to be darker because the light version was too similar to Sideswipe, a similar-looking sports car also on the shelf now.
