Robert Redford Announces He Will Retire From Acting After Next Two Films Robert Redford will retire from acting after completing production on his final two films, to focus solely on directing and sketching. “I’m getting tired of acting,” Redford said. “I’m an impatient person, so it’s hard for me to sit around and do take after take after take. At this point in my life, age 80, it’d give me more satisfaction because I’m not dependent on anybody. It’s just me, just the way it used to be, and so going back to sketching—that’s sort of where my head is right now." Hail Hydra! But seriously, all the best to him.
You know, I just watched The Sting (a film staring Robert Redford) recently for a film paper I had to turn in Wednesday. So its kind of funny that he announces his retirement now.
He's a cool guy, I've never seen him do a bad job at anything. Curious to see his sketches now. I bet they're great, too.
Robert Redford Officially Retires From Acting During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 81-year-old Redford (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Captain America: Winter Soldier) confirmed that he was following through on his 2016 desire to retire from acting. “Never say never,” said Redford, “but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [I’ll] move towards retirement after this ’cause I’ve been doing it since I was 21. I thought, Well, that’s enough. And why not go out with something that’s very upbeat and positive?” The Academy Award-winning actor and director explained that the story of Forrest Tucker, the titular old man in The Old Man & the Gun, helped cement his decision. “To me, that was a wonderful character to play at this point in my life,” said Redford. “The thing that really got me about him — which I hope the film shows — is he robbed 17 banks and he got caught 17 times and went to prison 17 times. But he also escaped 17 times. So it made me wonder: I wonder if he was not averse to getting caught so he that could enjoy the real thrill of his life, which is to escape?” Thank you Mr Redford.
good to actors in his caliber or from the past/famous in their hey days being casted in MCU films. then we have Rene Russo, Michelle Pffeifer, Michael Douglas, Cate Blanchett. I didn't really expect him to be a Hydra in Winter Soldier. Knowing how Nick Fury looked up to him very much. I guess the Russo's have really the knack in story telling about deconstructivisms, spies, political thriller genres.
Actors don't need to announce they're retiring from acting. It's like people who announce they're quitting a forum or ask to have their account deleted. Just stop posting. Redford has had an amazing career with a ton of classic roles and a hugely significant contribution to cinema in general, with Sundance and whatnot. But unless he's fishing for a lifetime achievement award, he doesn't need to announce this.
Hell,....... i didn't think the guy was acting anyway anymore since hes like 70 something. I can't really tell you what movie he was even in.
Read the article; he didn't actually "announce" squat. He answered a question he was asked, and simply confirmed that he was following through with what he said (also in an interview - not a statement) a few years ago: that he'll probably back away from acting soon to focus on other things... like many, many actors have said long into their careers. And one of the last guys in the world that needs to fish for anything is Robert Redford. At this point, he's guaranteed a well deserved lifetime achievement award whether he wants one or not. And even if he did announce this as a public statement, I'd respect it. Actors of this caliber are rare, and I know that I, like umpteen thousands of other fans, would rather know for sure that these people who we respect, admire, enjoy films from, etc. are retiring rather just disappearing and leaving everyone left wondering. Nothing wrong with artists of this stature giving a farewell, and doing so is nowhere remotely comparable to forum users, of all things, saying they're not posting their banality anymore.
They should at least wait until they turn up in one of those sponsored clickbait "the real reason Hollywood won't cast anymore" articles.
Robert Redford Backtracks On Retirement Talk As He Calls The Announcement A “Mistake” - IMDb “That was a mistake. I should never have said that,” Redford told Variety. He continued, “If I’m going to retire, I should just slip quietly away from acting, but I shouldn’t be talking about it because I think it draws too much attention in the wrong way. I want to be focused on this film and the cast.” When asked if ‘Old Man’ would be his last role, he said, “I’m not answering that.” He adds, “Keep the mystery alive.”
