Legendary Batman writer, Denny O'Neil dies at age 81 | GamesRadar+

Denny O’Neil may have more popularly been known as a legendary writer at DC Comics with an influential run on Batman, but the guy was also partly responsible for the foundation of Transformers G1. He worked with Jim Shooter on the initial story treatment as well as the initial characters. Denny O’Neil was also the one who named Optimus Prime.
    May he rest in peace.

Damn. I walked past him at Baltimore Comic Con about a year and a half ago. He looked old, but in fine health. What a loss.....he was pretty much in charge of Batman for the 20 years I read the comics.

As a comic fan, I associate him more with that and only tangently remember his impact on Transformers. That's super sad to see all these giants of the 60's and 70's comic industry passing away. I was just reading a Jack Kirby book yesterday too.

Sad news indeed. His contribution to comics overall dwarves his influence on Transformers... his work at DC is legendary.

Heh.. he couldn't even remember naming Optimus Prime.

RIP, man. Another part of my childhood gone, the namer of Optimus Prime (both then, and now, one of the coolest names ever) himself.

It is very sad news to hear of his passing. Denny O'Neil's impact on comics is immeasurable, he is one of the icons of comic book storytelling. Decisions he made reverberate to this day. We are all better for having known his work.

Really was one of the founders of Transformers as we know it. Pop culture wouldn\'t be the same without him. R.I.P.

I saw Optimus Prime and passed away and I shit a brick thinking it was... a certain Marine’s younger brother associated with the character. This is still really sad nonetheless. RIP.

I always thought it was Bob Budanisky(?) who gave Optimus his name?

A number of years ago, I worked with Denny's wife (who has also passed away). I would often to fix their computer and help them install new software. He was the nicest dude. I would never let him give me money for the work I did, so he would pay me in comics. I would talk to him for hours and he was always so happy to chat. I'm holding back tears right now.
    RIP Denny.

Proud to say I was able to meet him at Indianapolis comic con about 5 years ago and was able to thank him for his contributions to in the comic field. I know he has had a lot of health issues the past few years and his wife died as well. It really sucks seeing the old guard comic guys pass away. He will be missed. RIP
