The charges against Justin Roiland were recently brought to my attention by a coworker, who postulated the idea that the Rick and Morty fandom might absolutely implode on itself and lead to the next Szechun sauce debacle. It could be a shitstorm of unforseen magnitude, and I’m here for it. I’m sorry fans of the show will have to suffer, well, possibly losing the characters VAs though.
As much as I enjoy the show, the fanbase is... I wanna say "dumpster fire", but I don't think that accurately describes it. IF they continue with the show (they absolutely will), Roiland's voices aren't too difficult to emulate. I'm sure they'll find a couple new VAs to fill in the roles. Hell, they can hand wave the slight differences away by a Rick experiment gone sideways.
Justin Roiland has since also been shown to have inappropriately messaged & tried to groom/solicit underage girls. So he's definitely done for, and rightfully. But this means that things could become a lot more complicated for the show. This might be a stretch but a friend pointed it out as a few of us were discussing the news - the end of the King Jellybean episode was them covering up his abuse. No one else in the cast & crew may have known about Roiland's actions (it's certainly what you'd hope for every reason), but whne they've made jokes about this kind of stuff in the past with the show including having a groomer & abuser's actions covered up, maybe it isn't the case that no one knew what he was actually like.
TBH, I dropped off hard after the last two seasons, so I really don't care at this point that it gets canceled, but I mean come on! It's Top Gear all over again, if you get rid of the main characters, no one is going to watch it because it sucks. He voices like half the characters, including the mains, so just canned the whole show. No one is going to watch it because they essentially got rid of Rick and Morty and they especially won't fucking watch it if he's found guilty. Well, it had three good seasons, so we will just leave it at that.
Anyone else find most of the episodes this past season hard to sit through because they weren’t very interesting and/or not really funny? I can watch season 1-4 over and over, but 5 and 6 seemed to have lost something.
Man, that’s surreal. Roiland is one of the most memorable voices from the last decade of western animation. Sic semper Morty-is.
I remember..... That screwed over Cartoon Network when the network head resigned over it. It was never the same after and many people think it's golden years died the next year in 2008 when the previous programing ended and the new boss's initiatives took over.
I think Adult Swim and the R&M crew made the right decision. I enjoyed this last season and the writing was a step up from the previous one. Justin Roiland is not irreplaceable, and the show will go on.
Watched Rick and Morty for a bit but then dropped it because it got worse as time went on. I personally think Roiland is a Hack. Everything he works on feels the same and his vocal range as voice actor is as deep as a puddle. Adult Swim won’t have a hard time replacing him.
There’s a dude on TikTok who does a scarily good Morty, apparently well known enough that even a casual fan knows about him (or at least if you search Morty impersonator he’s the first to come up). Wonder if they’ll consider signing him on. Rick is not a terribly hard voice to replicate or imitate, but Morty/Blendin Blendin is more distinctive.
Oh, that's bad with Roiland, he was the best thing the past seasons. I found Rick and Morty really awesome until that season when we had the other Ricks and other Mortys and Evil Morty and stuff. What came after had interesting episodes, cool episodes, but I got hooked that this silly show suddenly had something much deeper going on. To only realize it really didn't. They threw in some good episodes at the end of each season. You thought "Finally! The season is getting started now with the real episodes!" wait for new episodes, wait for new episodes, go on the internet so see if there's another break only to find out "OH! I watched the finale again 2 months ago?! WHAAAT?" And I'm getting really sour that they promised so many seasons and episodes in season 3 or 4 or whatever. And obviously that was just a joke. If the seasons would be completely awesome, I wouldn't mind waiting so long. But waiting so long for a handful of episodes that only seem to kick off the season in the end of the season?! I found the majority of the last seasons felt like filler. Maybe this is it and Rick and Morty is dead. When they don't even have their voices anymore, what else does it have going for itself right now?
I'm not exactly a super mega fan of Roiland or anything, I did quite enjoy High on Life but I really can't say I'm a fan of how quickly the establishment are turning their backs on him despite him not having had his day in court yet. After the shit with Johnny Depp you'd think people would be more ready to be skeptical whenever we run into this sort of thing. There are always two sides to every story.
This news is hilarious to me because not a month or two ago I saw Roiland collaborating with a lot of Youtubers. Like, a truly scatterbrained selection from RLM to Oddheader. THAT done did aged poorly. Imagine being booted off your own creations because you just couldn't not be a sex pest. What was that he always said in that generic shrill voice he gave two thirds of his characters? "Ooooooowee!"
