I'm pretty sure that most of you are aware of Richard Roeper's tirade on Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Well, I happened to check out one of his latest reviews and it was about Fast Five. He praised the film, even though, as He mentioned, it's "dumb and defies physics and logic". Yet, he bashed Dark of the Moon for those very reasons. He even went so far as to call Fast Five the most action-packed live-action cartoon of the year. Does anyone else not see the inconsistency? He condemns Dark of the Moon for the same reasons that he praises Fast Five and then praises Fast Five for being a "live-action cartoon" (i.e. unrealistic), even though that doesn't fit its genre, unlike Dark of the Moon (which is science-fiction). What do you guys think of this?

Not as inconsistent as the pacing in DOTM!

    DOHOHO!

Could be he found fast five was more able to help him suspend his disbelief, and DOTM came off as unreasonably unrealistic to him. It could also mean he meant fast five was an exaggeration of realistic events (like the exaggerations and hyperbolic action in a cartoon), sort of like Crank, rather than something that was based on fantasy/science-fiction.

I loved both of these movies. I think he just found Fast Five to be good popcorn entertainment that wasn't trying to be realistic, but he found Dark of the Moon to be gritty and he couldn't suspend his disbelief for it. I agree with him on Fast Five, but I disagree with him on DOTM. Both of these movies are in my top 10 all time favorites at the moment and I had to pick up both on blu-ray immediately.

People say I hate reviewers just because they dislike the TF movies. That's not true. I hate reviewers that dislike the movies for stupid reasons like this guy.

Gotta say I think that's a little overkill, myself.

    Two possibilities come to mind.

Either he likes Transformers as a concept (didn't he give a good review to the first film, or am I thinking of someone else?) and felt like DOTM didn't live up to its potential, whereas he felt Fast Five is a ridiculous concept and was able to enjoy the lunacy, or...

He recognizes that Transformers and Michael Bay have become punchlines and yet are also the most widely-publicized and widely-seen movies and jumped on the bandwagon, hoping that an outrageously bad review, not just a bad review but one in which he virtually becomes a special effect himself as he delivers it, would elevate his own fame as a movie critic.

Not really inconsistent because even with the same elements different films are going to handle them better or worse than other films.

Lets take two other films as an example. Star Wars a New Hope requires the suspension of disbelief to roll with a farm boy with a magical sword is going to defeat a moon sized weapon with a mystical magical thing called The Force. 2012 requires the suspension of disbelief that all the junk science that has been dis-proven could happen and that you could somehow out run a pyroclastic flow on foot. Star Wars does well at turning off your brain to that's not possible while 2012 was just you've got to be kidding that's so fake.

So for Roeper I guess the cartoon physics worked better in a film that was expected to be horrible than the cartoon physics in a film where the production team was claiming they would make up for every bad thing in the last film.

    Honestly it's his opinion.

Also DOTM's ending was terrible. It's not surprising that critics hated it. The real problem is the fans not letting the critics have their own opinion on these films.

These films are honestly poorly written and are really just a slam bam in your face movie. It depends really on taste.

Also i love the first movie. DOTM fails to improve as a sequel.

Its the way the critics say things. I mean there are literaly millions of
movies worse than dotm and yet they exaggerate on the hate.

In before frothing at the mouth 11 year old fanboys.

Split Lip, Nachtsider, and especially bellpeppers have been on the money. Who gives a shit? Critics don't determine whether you like a movie or not. Yes, some of DOTM was crap. In my opinion it was the best of the three films. That's the key thing - what matters is your opinion. No one else. Not Ebert, not another TFW member. Your opinion is the only one you should care about, and just forget these critics. So what if they don't like Transformers? You don't need to be threatening to shove Megatron's hobo shotgun up their ass like a little kid. Grow up.

'Course, I'm kinda being hypocritical, posting here, when I just said, "Don't like don't comment."

This has nothing to do with valuing the opinion of someone else over your own. It's simply about the inconsistency in his judgements in regard to films. His opinion doesn't affect my enjoyment of DOTM; I love it.
