It's mostly a logic puzzle, but with the larger puzzles, occasionally/eventually you get to a point where it's a guess. In the early 90s, there was nothing so aggravating as going through an entire large puzzle, only to come down to two choices, and choosing incorrectly, thus triggering the mine and ending the game.
There are points you do need to guess, especially the first move of each game since you have no uncovered numbers to go by. But when you study the numbers logically most of the time you can determine where you can click.
To be fair, when you start, you do have to guess. There won't be any tiles with numbers to start - so you click somewhere, hoping the first tile you click isn't mined. I think I would click in a corner to start, and then try and solve with what I had. If you clicked a corner, and hit "3", then jackpot, you could flag all the tiles around it, and go on. If not (say, you hit a "1"), then yes, it would be a bit of guess work to figure out which one of the three around the corner tile was mined, or you could just bail on that one, and then try each other corner. Sometimes that opens up a section of tiles, and you go from there. But... don't go down that pathway if you like logic puzzles. I know people who wasted a significant amount of time on that game, followed only by Spider Solitaire or Freecell.
On the topic of old MSEP games, I've just noticed that Edge Surf has gone SkiFree for Christmas complete with the original abominable snowman. It's at edge://surf if your using it and have the latest version.
dude on ebay got me a tg16 12ft extension shipped to me in 3 days . never had an experience like that especially the week of xmas. looks like im all set for some glorious tg16 fun on the 65 inch tv this weekend! have great holiday guys and get some good retro gaming in.
While my brother is putting the smack down on his kids playing Mario Kart 64 on his Switch, I'm rummaging around for controllers so I can put the smack down on him on the OG Mario Kart 64 on the N64... Might have to get a Retrotink Mini 2x for this to work at his place...
Having seen that I now have the burning urge to harass relevant publishers and rights holders to make Minmay Tetris a thing.
With all the Christmas activity I haven’t had much time to play my Coregrafx Mini, but I have tried a few games so far. The only game on it I have any experience with is Rondo of Blood because I bought it for my Wii Virtual Console. Impressions so far: Alien Crush - I enjoy video pinball so this is pretty cool, but not much to it. Blazing Lasers - Pretty fun. The weapons kick ass. Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire - …..WOW this game kicked my ass all over the screen. I totally wasn’t prepared, and had to use a continue after literally a minute or 2. Splatterhouse - Pretty fun. I know it has a cult following and I can see why due to the horror theme, which was pretty rare back when it came out. Neutopia - I’m actually surprised how much fun I’m having with it. It’s like a more refined Legend of Zelda without the cryptic clues and lack of direction. Still haven’t found the first dungeon yet, though I did find a couple of important items. Lords of Thunder - DAMN. I actually compare this to Doom 2016 in that it’s presented like YOU are the final boss and everything is just waiting for you to go postal on it to a metal soundtrack. I f’n love it.
My brothers and sisters in retro… My eyes have been opened *raises hands to the heavens* AND I SEE THE LIGHT. BAH GAWD AH SEE THE LIGHT. I mentioned I tried out Lords of Thunder and Blazing Lasers on Christmas night, and they were great. Then last night I tried Soldier Blade, and while playing I had an epiphany…. Y’see, I grew up with shmups like Gradius, Life Force, Tiger-Heli, etc… and now I feel like I just found out what a shmup truly can be. Fast action, ridiculous screen-filling weapons, huge bosses…good god almighty I had a feeling of exhilaration I haven’t felt from a game in a while. This is why I bought the Coregrafx Mini, to experience games I haven’t before, and now I wish I had gotten a TG-16 back when it came out just so I could have this experience in my prime gaming years. Just after 1 or 2 levels, Lords of Thunder and Soldier Blade may be 2 of the best shmups I’ve ever played. I want MOAR.
oh yes this will do just fine until the analogue duo drops the levelhike hdmi cable is very nice. just plug and play no bs. very good image quality.
Dude, if your getting your mind blown by PCE shooters then your going to need medication once you graduate to 90s arcade shooters.
Haha After thinking about it, I’m really not that knowledgeable about 90’s Arcade shmups. I do own R-Types for PS1 and I remember renting Einhander, but I wasn’t a big fan of either of those, and they’re not arcade anyway. I’m open to suggestions on what 90’s Arcade shmups I should try
