I want to throw a ball joint in, but I'm worried about breaking the head or something. What is the safest way to remove the head?

Hmmm... I'll make that a last resort. Any ideas with a less chance of melted flesh?

The soldering iron is your best bet.

Yeah, that's the only way if you want to keep all parts intact and usable.

Take that top, swivel piece off (should pop right off the mushroom peg) and heat that pin up from underneath. After a bit you should be able to just slide the head right off.

There really shouldn't be any worry of burning flesh or anything. One hand should be on the soldering iron, the other holding that turret piece. Just put the thing down when you try to pull the head off.

As mentioned, using a soldering iron will work best (just be careful!). Personally, I've removed about 3 (maybe 4) of these heads & the first I hit it with a soldering iron, while the rest were removed using a hard blade from my Leatherman tool. I just worked it up under the head & "popped it" off the pin.
