Forever. Back when the Wii and DS came out, Nintendo was new to the internet gaming scene. So they contracted a company to build and operate the online gaming structure for them. That company was purchased by another company that later decided that they didn't want to be in that business anymore, at least not a price that anyone was willing to pay. If Nintendo wants to continue Wii/DS online capabilities, they would have to build a new system from scratch.

Nintendo has since then developed their own systems for the WiiU and 3DS so they are unaffected by this third-party decision.

[Analogy time: Your county wants to build a commuter rail for a popular tourist area. Since county officials have no idea how to run a railroad themselves, they hire a rail company to lay the tracks, run the trains, and keep the operation running for an annual fee. Fast forward ten years. The rail company gets bought out and the after running the rail for a few years, informs the county that they will be shutting down operations. Now the county has two choices: convince the rail company to continue operations (requiring a boatload of $$$), build their own railroad to that area (as the rail company owns the tracks), or spend their resources ($$$) in the areas that the tourists actually go to now. Um, did I mention the tourist area is on an island? Yeah, it's on an island so you can't build a road there.]

So much for my kids enjoying playing their games with their friends now. Good thing their friends didn't go get mario kart like i was telling them so our kids could play together. My kids were having fun building their animal crossing town so they could visit each other. I don't see my kids touching their wii's anymore now. Most of their games invole some type of playing online.

This sucks. My son enjoys playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl online with other people. I guess the Wii will now collect dust in the corner or moved to storage.

There is a way to play online, but it involves homebrew.
