So I put this on the UKTD thread yesterday and thought it would be a good idea to put it out to everyone.

If you could recommend just one toy from the original Beast Wars line (character aside, just the toy itself) as a must-have for every collector, what would it be?

Go big. Either Optimal Optimus with it's presence and four fun modes or Ultra Class Rampage. Rampage has rubber treads on it's crab-tank mode, so cool!

It is difficult to go past the Original Optimus Primal gorilla. It's an incredible action figure, not just a Transformer. Replete with accessories that all hide away, gimmicks galore, and a good heft. But I think I'd be choosing that if I was going to introduce Beast Wars to a new comer, not a collector, as the initial post sets out.

With a collector in mind, my focus turns to the pinnacle of the series, the Transmetals, and I'd have to go with Transmetal Tarantulas. That thing is... damn near flawless.

If we're counting all of beast wars. I'm throwing my hat with. 300px-BWN-toy_Heinrad.jpg

Heinrad is just waaaay to unique to pass up.

If we're not counting the jp beast toys then I'll say tigertron he's always been a fun bot to mess around with.

The original Ultra Optimus and /or Megatron. Walmart reissued them recently (more recent that the 1990's), so availabilty and price should be good. Sturdy and fun. And if you have $ to burn, Takara released reissues with primo paint jobs

That original BW set that hit stores first, Batimus Primal, and Megalligator, are both superb toys that explain the concept with a pack-in comic. Either one of those in someone's hands are a joyful experience.

Damn that’s hard! There’s so many good ones to choose from.

I think I’ll have to go with the original Ultra class Megatron. Great looking bot mode, cool T-Rex alt mode, fun transformation, spring loaded projectiles, grabby grab tail claw and a friggin’ water spray feature to top it all off. Gotta love his cool mutant mask/bat ears as well!

If you want something more shiny, you can’t go wrong with the Transmetals. Megatron, Optimus Primal, Cheetor, Rattrap and Tarantulas are all a ton of fun with their third vehicle mode. Rampage is cool too, although pretty clumsy in the kibble department. For Transmetal Megatron you’d wanna spring for the Japanese Metals version though, as the western one is made with brittle gold plastic and will most certainly break.

For me it would have to be Transmetal Airazor.

I don't have any real appeal to the originals "Beasts" all that much, but would have to say that Optimus has probably the most features to offer.

Ultra Class Optimus Prime all the way. Never had him as a kid, thought he looked lame. Kid me was an absolute tool. I got him on Walmart clearance for my kid's Christmas last year, and holy crap is that toy amazing. Absolutely top tier; not trying to sound like an old geezer, but they truly don't make toys like this anymore. Not too mention, you should be able to find him at a reasonable price.

Ha, came here to say Heinrad. I’m not a BW guy but I had to have him. He’s terrific and like you said, very unique.

I agree. Primal is very fun, large, and loaded with gimmicks.

The original gorilla Optimus Primal is just quintessential Beast Wars for me. It just works so well as a mission statement for everything the line was going to be - "realistic" (as in not robotic / Cybertronian) beast modes, better articulation than anything that came before, weaponry integrated into the beast mode, and at least one gimmick per figure. Even his robot mode is clean and traditionally heroic, with no weird animal parts hanging off like Megatron. If you have no interest in Beast Wars but just want a representative from the line, you can't go wrong with him.

Now, if the question is what is the single most impressive Beast Wars figure to stand out in your collection, then I think Beast Wars Neo Big Convoy takes it for me. He's similar to Optimus Primal in that he kind of represents the best of his line. Beast Wars Neo was really big on shell-forming and turning big chunks of animal parts into weaponry, and Big Convoy handles both of those elements in style. The chunks of mammoth hanging off him actually improve his robot mode, and the figure has some of the best shelf presence of any Transformers figure ever. Like, it holds its own next to masterpiece figures:

BW Fuzor Silverbolt. I loved the mashup between wolf and eagle beast mode and it rocked in toy form. Transformation wasn't a pain in the butt and the robot mode looked just as awesome. It had some kibble but not enough to be a deal breaker. I also really enjoyed the wings being somewhat poseable in bot modes as well. It was just a hinge but it made a big difference. The missiles were also not annoying. The wings could angle forward a little to shoot the missiles or he could hold them like melee weapons. Just an overall fun little figure for $10 (at the time).

Ultra class Optimus Primal. Integrated gimmicks while maintaining full articulation while incorporating storage for all weapons.
